Weekly Mail June 25, 2023

                                                              8:35 PM EDT June 24, 2023

Hey everyone

There are few things I find more aggravating than when it rains during the first few days of summer. It seems to happen every year. I love that the sun stays out till almost 9 o'clock at night, there is something really cool about that to me. There are some places in the world that have a midnight sun, and that is definitely something I'd love to see once in my lifetime.

But here in NY, we get sunsets around 8:45 or so, and it seems like it's either outright raining on those days or very cloudy. The forecast had called for lots of rain on Saturday, but thankfully it turned out to be a gorgeous night, and I was able to enjoy the late sunset. (though it was still a bit overcast) I realize in the grand scheme of life these are minor annoyances, but well, they are annoyances just the same.

And on that note, onto the week that was..

TRAGEDY AT SEA

The five poor souls who died while in a submersible that was going to explore the wreckage of the Titanic were guilty of nothing more than a sense of adventure and a unique curiosity. I by no means want to make light of their deaths, or trivialize the tragedy in any way. Especially the 19 year old boy who was on the submersible with his father.

But I really can't get past the feeling that perhaps this was a trip that only should be undertaken by trained professionals, people who have extensive experience doing underwater research, and not thrill seekers with money to burn. Especially upon hearing about how this watercraft was built and operated, by Oceangate Exhibitions.

Per the BBC.com

A former junior employee told the BBC he was surprised to find that Titan's electrical design included off-the-shelf development boards, as opposed to using a custom, in-house design like other engineering companies.

David Pogue, a CBS News journalist who joined (Oceangate founder) Stockton Rush on a trip to the Titanic wreck in 2021, said the chief executive drove the Titan with a game controller and used "rusty lead pipes from the construction industry as ballast".

Yet Mr Rush assured Mr Pogue that only thing that really mattered was the vessel's hull, built from an unusual and largely untested material for a deep sea vessel: carbon fibre, with titanium end plates.

Mr Rush knew carbon fibre was used successfully in yachts and aviation, and believed it would allow for his submersible to made more cheaply than industry-standard steels ones.

"There's a rule you don't do that," said Mr Rush in 2021. "Well, I did."

Well, this may come as a surprise, but sometimes there are reasons why rules are put in place, why you need a certification to do certain things. Because when they don't, things like this could happen.

Now, could this have happened on a vessel that was up to specifications and controlled by a proper control panel (and not a video game controller..I mean seriously?) and built with the recommended steel? Of course.

But from where I'm sitting, it seems like this whole thing was a recipe for disaster.

Now, some may point out that I have cheered on Jeff Bezos Blue Origin Space program, which again allows people with $$$ to ride a rocket into outer space. Yes I have and I still do. For one thing, I believe Bezos and his people wouldn't cut corners. Look at all the negative publicity this underwater disaster wrought. (and I'm not suggesting the Oceangate people wanted anything bad to happen) but can you imagine if one of Bezos rockets exploded over Texas? With millions of people watching on TV? Even he doesn't have enough money to buy himself out of that disaster.

Plus I still believe that space offers much more of a chance to explore and maybe one day expand. The Titanic sank over 100 years ago, and at this point I'm not sure there's any real value in going down there. And again, if there is, let trained oceanographers do it.

I just think this all could have been avoided. More to the point, it should have been avoided.

POLITICS: Congressional Catfight

The dingbat Congresswoman from Colorado's 3rd Congressional district, Lauren Boebert, moved to introduce an impeachment resolution against President Biden.

Now, since the first thing the attention starved whore representing Georgia's 14th congressional district did upon being sworn into Congress was to introduce a resolution to impeach Joe Biden, even before he took the Oath of Office, you would think she would be overjoyed at this development.

Instead, she essentially accused Bloebert of being a copycat, and then proceeded to call her a BITCH on the House Floor, according to The Daily Beast.  Bloebert when asked if this actually happened, responded "I'm not in middle school" I could point out that Bloebert chose middle school over lets say high school because it doesn't seem like she spent much time in high school, but I'll digress and say she tried to take the high road, such as it is.

You know I don't like to mention either one of these pea brains because the last thing I want to give either one of them is the attention they both lust after. But I'm mentioning them here because it drives home my point.

They don't care about you. They care about themselves.

And this was my biggest fear coming out of the Trump administration. That people would look at how he conducted himself and say, "That's the way to do it" These two are the epitome of that.

I have had my differences with the so called Squad on the Democratic side. I don't agree with everything they do, and I sure as hell don't agree with everything they say. (Some people did something on 9/11)

But I still think the overall scheme of things, they want better for the country, and they are willing to present a united front to do so. I still think AOC has a big ego, but I also think she would ultimately check it at the door for the greater good.

Not these two. They apparently can't stand each other, but they f-cking deserve each other.

It's us good hardworking Americans that don't deserve this nonsense.

OK, onto some good news......

MUSIC-A new Beatle Song!

When John Lennon was posthumously voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, it was Paul McCartney who gave the presentation speech. That night, Yoko Ono gave Paul some cassettes of unfinished songs from John. Two of those songs, Free as a Bird, and Real Love, were worked on by the three surviving Beatles, and became the big hook of the Beatles Anthology documentary project and accompanying albums. The two new songs were released as singles, with Free as a Bird making the Top 10, and Real Love just missing out at number 11.

The Anthology CD's were three double-cd sets, that came out in November 1995, March 1996 and October 1996.  Each was to contain a "new" Beatle song. Free as a Bird was on the first one and Real Love was on the second, but a third song called Now and Then, was scrapped for the third. (A George Martin instrumental instead led off Volume 3) Apparently, George Harrison didn't think the quality of Now and Then was Beatles worthy, so he raised an objection to it. Paul, who had always insisted that the rule within the group was all decisions had to be unanimous, honored George's decision and Now and Then was cast aside.

But a couple of weeks ago, Paul announced that they were indeed going to release a new Beatle song. And many believe that it is the aforementioned Now and Then.

Paul himself didn't specify the name of the song, but since this is the one they had previously worked on, it stands to reason that it is indeed Now and Then.

He made the announcement during an interview with the BBC.

"We were able to take John's voice and get it pure through this AI, so then we could mix the record as you would normally do."

Now some fans were concerned that Paul mentioned AI, because apparently someone used AI to create a song by Drake and the Weeknd called Heart on My Sleeve. The song was making its way up the charts till  it was removed from Spotify and YouTube amongst other music services.

Paul assured everyone that this isn't AI creating a replica of John's voice, but a method used to isolate and clarify John's voice, similar to what Peter Jackson did with the tapes from the Let it Be sessions that was released on Thanksgiving 2021. I'm speculating here, but I’m guessing this was how Paul convinced George's widow, Olivia Harrison to sign off on it.

Paul says this is the "last Beatles record" something that I take with a grain of salt. I've been hearing this is the last Beatle-fill in the blank- since at least the Anthology project and probably way before that. As long as they can make $$$, they'll find more stuff to put out. Having said that, I'm psyched to see how this all plays out.

Unfortunately I haven't read enough on this whole situation in Russia to make a commentary on it. Maybe next week.

                            Yes, he actually said this

Happy Father’s Day!

To all my fellow dads out there, I hope you all had a great day. I sure did, got to spend time with the family on Sunday, including my own dad, who, as many of you who read this every week (or so) know is not only my personal hero, but as a military veteran, an American hero as well. The reason I need to brag about that, is really because he never does.

Like ever.

So again, a very happy day.

And now for the complaints….

Both the NHL and NBA seasons came to an end last week in Finals that turned out to be complete duds. The good news is that there were no victory parties in South Beach (though I’m sure there was any other party you could want, at least according to Will Smith) as the Denver Nuggets and Vegas Golden Knights both cruised to 5 game series wins. I have to admit, I’d love to see what a victory parade in Vegas is like, I’m guessing gambling, strippers, lounge acts, or in other words, a typical day in Vegas, just with the Stanley Cup making appearances along with Celine Dion and Wayne Newton.

As for the Nuggets, as I said previous, I’m more happy the Heat lost than I am that the Nuggets won, though I have to admit that Nikola Jokic was a privilege to watch. Every once in a while you get a championship series where one player elevates themselves to the point where you remember their performances almost as much as which team won the title. That’s where I think Jokic stands today.

More locally, we had some hockey news as well…

RANGERS NEW COACH:

Meet the new boss

Same as the old boss

The Who-Won’t Get Fooled Again

The Rangers hired Peter Laviolette to be their new coach. To be fair, there really wasn’t any slam dunk choices for the Rangers to choose from, and it’s hard to argue that he wasn’t the best of the slim pickings there were. But to me he is the textbook definition of retread.

This will be Laviolette’s 6th head coaching job in the NHL, having previously coached the Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, Nashville Predators and Washington Capitals.

He’s made three trips to the Finals, with the Flyers and Predators, and winning the Cup with the Hurricanes, so maybe retread is a tad harsh. But I’m wary of someone who has been shown the door as much as he has, there have been plenty of lean years that he has coached too. And the Rangers have been going through coaches in Steinbrennerian fashion lately. Laviolette will be the third new coach in the last 5 years.

I had my issues with Gerard Gallant, and my heart didn’t break to see him go after seeing my Blueshirts get bounced in the first round against the Devils. But I think firing him, only to bring in another guy who seems to get recycled a lot? Not sure that’s the way to go here either.

But as my Post colleague CJ Sullivan pointed out, every once in a while, you bring in a retread and he turns out to be Joe Torre. That’s true. Sometimes you bring in a recycled coach and he turns into Rich Kotite.

Yikes!

BASEBALL: Mets fading fast

Things could have been worse. The Mets could have lost both games to the Yankees last week at Citi Field, which might have seriously sent me over the edge. Last year, when both teams were doing well, it was less important to me that we beat the Bronx Bombers, being that we had bigger and better things to look forward to.

But this year has really been a mess, starting with Edwin Diaz going down in the WBC. We could have overcome that if our vaunted starting pitching was performing the way we hoped (especially at these prices). Instead Max Scherzer has been awful, Justin Verlander inconsistent (though he pitched a gem against the Yanks on Wednesday) Kodai Senga being either brilliant or awful and not help from any of our young arms. Combine that with little to no help from Francisco Lindor our $300 million shortstop, and Pete Alonso getting hurt and this has been a real tough team to watch this year.

There’s still hope. As I said Verlander pitched great, hopefully he’s found his groove. I’m praying Senga finds some consistency and that Jose Quintanilla comes off the injured list and gives us a boost. Scherzer and Cookie Carrasco may have seen their better days go by. Lindor needs to start hitting, like now, and the same goes for the Squirrel Jeff McNeil.

But we are a couple weeks from July 1 and after that, a couple weeks from the All-Star Game. That’s halfway through the season. That’s when the panic button might get hit. And it’s coming quick.

I wanted to discuss more the whole Donald Trump documents fiasco, but you know what?   Not tonight. It’s Father’s Day, let’s just enjoy. Maybe next week.

Thank you to all who sent Father’s Day love.

Weekly Mail June 11, 2023

Hey:

So there are some weeks where I go to start writing this and I have nothing. I try to keep the dad bragging here to a bare minimum, the news is either nothing or nothing new, nothing worth writing about in sports and just a general lack of useable material. That happened last week as I got ready to write there was just nothing that got my writing juices flowing, I scoured the web for things and came up with a couple of  topics to discuss. But that was really pulling victory from the jaws of defeat.

This week, we will not have that issue..

THE ORANGE MENACE (PART I)

For those of us who were asking, "What's Next?, we got the answer on Wednesday.

Wildfire's throughout Quebec and Ontario caused most of New York state and for that matter the Northeastern United States to be blanketed in an orange smoky haze on Wednesday afternoon. This was what it looked like on Wednesday as I was leaving my office....

The picture doesn't do it justice. You also had the smell. Last fall, Tara and I went to one of her co-workers houses and they had a real wood burning fire pit. That what this was like, except 100 times stronger and there was no escape from it.  It was hard to breathe. The governor said we should all stay inside if we could and (I could hear folks freaking out right then) wear a mask. I found myself in the peculiar position of wearing a mask outside and taking it off when I got inside, rather than the other way around during the worst days of the pandemic.

Instinctively, I turned the clock radio I had onto Q104.3 at 3 PM, for Ken Dashow's 3 @ 3. He picks three songs that either have something in common or represent some sort of current event. When I know what the topic is going to be, I try to instead predict what songs he's going to play. I thought maybe Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix (even though it was mainly an Orange haze), Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple (I included the Homer Simpson version above) and since this all started by our neighbors up north, I thought maybe Blame Canada from the South Park Soundtrack would have been apropos.*

But that wasn't in the Q104 rotation, so they went with the aforementioned Deep Purple, Pink Floyd's Breathe (In the Air) off Dark Side of the Moon, and Genesis' Land of Confusion, my 8th grade song which contains the lyric-But I can see the fire still alight/They're burning into the night.

I wrote last week about the blessings and curses of social media. Well, that was on display here as well. There were a number of funny posts on Facebook, I had one friend who compared the pictures to Luke Skywalker's home planet Tatooine, (where most were comparing it to Mars).

Twitter on the other hand, had either people who were blaming this on climate change, or people making fun of those blaming it on climate change. Twitter never lets you down, does it? It's the Wal-Mart of social media.

Of course climate change played a part in this, you want to debate the degree to which is did, that's your prerogative. This was the worst air quality reading around here since they started recording those statistics.

The good news is that it seems like the worst of this is over for now. The weather on Saturday was really nice. The scary thing is that it can happen again and at this rate probably sooner than later. Indeed, on CBS Sunday Morning, Dr Vijay Limaye. Sr scientist and environmental epidemiologist at the NRCD, said “We may look back on this fondly in the future”

Scary

THE ORANGE MENACE (PART II)

On Thursday evening, just as we were starting to be able to breathe again, the news began to break that former President Donald Trump was being indicted on the Mar-a-Lago Documents case. I watched some of the coverage on CNN, till Tara cried uncle and a rerun of Ghosts came on.

The indictment was unsealed on Friday and Special Council Jack Smith spoke Friday afternoon.

Captain Orange is accused of violating 7 federal laws, but there are actually 37 counts against him. 31 of those counts have to do with willful retention of national defense information, a violation of the Espionage Act.  There are three counts of withholding or concealing documents in a federal investigation. There are two counts of giving false statements regarding the turning over of the documents. And finally, one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice. That last count (if I'm understanding correctly) is what has gotten Waltine Nauta in trouble.

Now, Jack Smith in his statement to the media on Friday, was very careful to say (and I'm glad he did) that in this country, you are still innocent until proven guilty. Indictments aren't convictions.

Having said that, it's really hard to read this indictment, see the photos and even to hear Trump in his own words and not think he's guilty as sin. They have him on tape saying he had a military document that "as president I could have declassified, but I didn't."  How anyone can hear that and then say he's being railroaded somehow is beyond me.

And then there were the pictures. My personal favorite was the one of the boxes of secret documents piled into a bathroom. Hey, who doesn't like to read on the toilet? Back in the day before smartphones I used to have Sports Illustrated between the toilet and the sink. Some of the best reading I've ever done was while going on the potty.

And now at Mar-A-Lago, you can read plans for bombing Iran, or where we have our strategic weapons stashed right there as you are making your contributions to society.

Light Bathroom Reading

I'll give Captain Orange this, history books will have volumes on all the laws this guy has broken, whether or not he gets convicted. He is scheduled to appear in a Miami courthouse at 3 PM on Tuesday. Tune in earlier so you can watch him get limo'ed to the courthouse.

SPORTS: SOMEBODY GET THIS MAN A 10 GALLON HAT...

          Dr. James Andrews

Jacob deGrom who hasn't pitched since April 30, announced this week that he will have to undergo Tommy John surgery. As pissed as I was when I felt like he hi-tailed it out of NY, as much as I have been rooting against him since he's pitched for the Rangers, I did feel bad for him when I saw him addressing the media after the news came down. That's just a heartbreak.

I don't feel bad for the Rangers. Like I said when they signed him, this was a clear case of what Bill Madden refers to as the "one dumb owner" rule. A 5 year deal for a guy who has as much arm trouble as deGrom has had was just moronic. And I think even Steve Cohen for all the $$$ he's been tossing around, was smart enough to not want to give him 5 years. He may have given him the $137.5 over a shorter period of time. But nobody was going 5 years for that. Except the Rangers apparently.

And now for two years of that 5 year deal deGrom will be doing what he has done a lot of lately...not pitching.

In 2018 and 2019 and in the beginning of 2021, he was something to behold wasn't he? His starts were must watch TV, even when the Mets were awful in 2018 and somewhat better in 2019. I was at one of his last starts in 2021 and even in that game he was unbelievable. It's a sin that he has had all the trouble he's had.

I'm not glad he's having arm trouble. But I am happy my team isn't paying for it. That I will admit.

The Mets have other issues anyway, their own high priced starters are (for now) healthy, but not pitching well. And now Pete Alonso is out for a couple of weeks after getting hit by a pitch from Braves pitcher Charlie Morton. That's another reason I don't gloat over injuries.

The Mets dropped two out of three to the much improved but still not great Pirates after being swept by both the Blue Jays and Braves. Getting late awfully early.

Stay Safe (I almost had to bring back Wear a Mask)

and Have a Great Week

Weekly Mail June 4, 2023

Hey:

We are into June, almost halfway through 2023 with summer rapidly approaching. Teachers and students, the finish line is within sight. Last weekend, we actually had 4 really nice days here in NY for Memorial Day Weekend, (starting with Friday evening). The last few years, I feel like at least one day of the weekend was a washout. Hopefully this is a sign of good things coming.

Onto the news such as it is....

POLLS: The 7 Most Hated Brands in the US.

AXIOS.com this week released a poll of the 100 brands in the United States with the worst reputations. The survey is the result of a partnership between Axios and Harris Poll to gauge the reputation of the most visible brands in America, based on Harris poll research. So, this isn't my opinion, it's a poll.

  1. The Trump Organization -(again I didn't conduct or vote in the poll)
  2. FTX
  3. Fox Corporation
  4. Twitter
  5. Meta
  6. Spirit Airlines
  7. TikTok

I didn't post this to troll the MAGA folks, (though I admit that's always a kick). What I found fascinating were 4, 5 and 7. Twitter, Meta (Facebook)  and Tik Tok.

I found this story on Facebook, I post this blog to Facebook, I have reconnected to hundreds of people I would probably never have heard from again if not for Facebook. In so many ways, I'm grateful for Facebook.

But I get why folks get frustrated with it. Thanks to Facebook, there is no such thing as an unexpressed thought, (guilty as charged here) and the old saying "Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone's got one? Well, FB is the living example of that very quote.

And Twitter is even worse.

With Facebook, most of the people I'm friends with there are folks that I have met somewhere on my life's journey, grammar school, high school, college, jobs, jobs, jobs. Now with Tim, people we've met through his schools.

But many of my friends aren't on Twitter, so my Twitter feed is mostly sportswriters, journalists I respect, politicians I respect and stuff like that. The problem with Twitter is that some of the people I follow re-tweet stuff from people I can't stand, and then it becomes the cesspool that everyone says it is.

And I blame nobody but myself for this. Because I could delete the app and not even bother with it. I managed to get through most of the current century without being on Twitter. I'm sure I could get rid of it and get on with my life.

And yet....

Jeff Pearlman on his weekly sub-stack discussed a similar dilemma. He's even more conflicted than I am. He's a published author and promotes much of his work on social media, Twitter being his main pipeline.

I don't have too many twitter followers and I only the blog on FB. But like Pearlman, I also can't look away from all the other bull$hit either.  Like I've said I'm a relative newcomer to Twitter, but many people say that Elon Musk has made it so much worse. I really don't have much to compare it to, but knowing what a lowlife Musk is, I tend to believe what they say.

The political lies, name calling and finger pointing. It has gotten to be ridiculous.

And I really think that's the reason that those 3 companies are on that list. We know we should probably turn away from it all, but we can't. And it's that helpless feeling that causes us to hate on those companies.

NEW DADS:

A couple of weeks ago, Robert DeNiro announced that he became a father for the 7th time. And last week Al Pacino announced that he is expecting a new baby with his girlfriend Noor Alfallah.

DeNiro is 79. Pacino, 81.

Really?

Look, these are two of the greatest actors in the history of film. They are millionaires many many times over, and yeah I'm pretty much live and let live, so it's really none of my business. I get it.

I just would think that you would want to be around to see your kids grow up. And at 80 years old or so, the chances of that happening are not great. And let's address the elephant in the room here. I don't know how old DeNiro's babymamma is, but Ms. Alfallah is 29. Woof on me all you want, but you know I'm right, a 29 year old woman isn't sleeping with an 81 year old dude because he's a "nice guy".

I know, I know, it's their money, it's their life, I should butt out. There's a ton more important stuff out there to worry about. I agree. I just think it's weird. And chasing your kid around in your 30's and 40's is hard enough. I can't imagine doing it at 80. Jeez!

SPORTS RANTS: The Stanley Cup and NBA Finals

I've often written on these pages how one thing America does not need is another team from Boston winning a major sports championship.  The Bruins, the Celtics, the Sawx and most of all the Patriots have met more than their quota of titles for this century. If I go the rest of my life without any more Beantown parades, that will suit me just fine.

Having said that, the thought both the Stanley Cup and Larry O'Brien trophies being paraded down on the strip in Miami makes my stomach churn. But that's what we have a very good possibility seeing before the month of June is out, as both the Florida Panthers and Miami Heat have improbably made it from the 8th seeds in their respective conferences to their sport's final round.

The Heat had jumped out to a 3-0 lead against the aforementioned Celtics, only to see that lead evaporate and the ECF go to a Game 7 in Boston. An early injury to Celtic star Jayson Tatum and overall ineffectiveness for Jaylen Brown doomed the Celtics. The Heat are now taking on the Denver Nuggets.

As for the Panthers, they too took out a heavily favored Boston team, this one being the Bruins. But that was in the first round. (The Heat knocked off the NBA best Milwaukee Bucks in the first round). The Bruins were not only the best team in the NHL this year, they set a record for most wins and points in the regular season. After the ruin of the Bruins (seewhatididthere?) Florida proceeded to knock off the Maple Leafs (extending their Stanley Cup drought to 56 years) and the Hurricanes to reach the Finals. They are playing the Vegas Golden Knights.

It wouldn't break my heart to see the Panthers beat Vegas, being that Vegas has been around less than 10 seasons and have seemingly had more success than my Rangers have had in almost 100. But I really don't want the Heat to win. I have already backed off my claims that Erik Spoelstra is an over-rated coach, (I should have listened to Ray on that one) but if the Heat win this title, I have to also concede that he should eventually receive a plaque in Springfield, MA. And it's another notch in Pat Riley's belt too, and that simply will not stand.

Speaking of things I had to walk back, Tim asked me the other night as we were watching Chris Bassitt now on the Blue Jays setting the Mets down, if I thought we should have re-signed him, as both Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling were suggesting. My first thought was to say yes, but I looked back at my Mets wrap up blogpost and I had written the following.

Max Scherzer, he of the $43 million contract, spit the bit twice. Once against the Braves, once against the Padres. Same with Chris Bassitt. We’re stuck with Scherzer, but Bassitt’s a free agent. Nice knowing ya kid. Adios!

LOL

Maybe I should cool off before I write, but that's half the fun right?

All right that’s all we got this week

Stay Safe,

and Have a Great Week
