Weekly Mail April 30, 2023

Hey everyone:

So I think it’s safe to categorize this weekend as a washout huh?

Tim had a meet Friday afternoon when the rains started and now as we are going to press here Sunday night, it’s still coming down. Well, tis the season as they say.

Let's get to it....

CABLE NEWS: Carlson and Lemon OUT!

I would never categorize myself as a Fox News aficionado, but back in the day, especially working at the Post during the week, I would catch some of their prime time shows. I didn't always like the way Bill O'Reilly would interview people, but some of his shows were interesting. When Sean Hannity had Alan Colmes as his partner, it bore some resemblance to the Fair and Balanced slogan the network was trumpeting. I once said hello to Hannity in the lobby of the News Corp building, and he looked at me as if I had just told him his momma wore combat boots. I had little use for him after that.

But even when he was on CNN Crossfire, and even when I leaned more to the right after 9/11, I never really liked Tucker Carlson. To me, he was like a grown up version of Spalding from Caddyshack.

When O'Reilly was sent packing because Fox got tired of paying off all the young women he harassed, they hired Tucker to replace him. Admittedly, I didn't watch one second of his show, but there were enough clips that made it to social media that I got the gist of where he was coming from. Another rich guy pretending to be a victim.

So when it came out in the depositions that Tucker admitted that the 2020 election fraud claims were bogus, and that he went on his show and said otherwise, and then Fox settled with Dominion Voting Systems for $787 million, well someone had to take the fall for that. I was as surprised as anyone that it was Tucker Carlson. As I said I never watched his show, but millions of people did, and ratings = $$$ usually. But like with O'Reilly, the higher-ups must have figured that the money Tucker was bringing in wasn't enough to cover the 3/4 of a billion bucks going out to Dominion. So out the door he went.

And speaking of guys who became more trouble than they were worth, only hours after Fox bid au revoir to Tucker, CNN sent Don Lemon on his way. His was another show I didn't watch too much of, not even when they moved him to the mornings.

Lemon didn't do himself any favors by saying that Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley was "past her prime" Pissing off over half your viewership is not in any news network's playbook.

There were also reports that he wasn't exactly what you would call a team player, and that he had made sexist comments to several female colleagues. CNN finally ran out of patience with him.

Is it a coincidence that Carlson and Lemon, two controversy lightning rods were $h-tcanned on the same day? I'll let you decide on that. But I can't really say I was sorry to see either one of them go.

FOOTBALL- Jets Finally get their man

Over a month after he told his buddy Pat McAfee that he wanted to play for the Jets, Aaron Rodgers officially arrived in NY. The Jets and Packers came to terms Monday afternoon on the long awaited trade.

The Jets gave up probably more than they had wanted to. They swapped 2023 first round picks with the Packers, which ended  up costing them getting one of the offensive lineman they wanted. They also gave up a 2024 second rounder that becomes a first rounder if Rodgers plays in 65% of the Jets plays this year. The Jets also gave up one of the two second round picks they had, and I believe got back a 6th rounder.

I was just pulling into the parking lot of OHS to pick Tim up after practice when I heard someone yell out "Aaron Rodgers!" Sure enough when I looked at my phone, ESPN was announcing that Adam Schefter was confirming the trade. My best guess is that the Jets finally caved on swapping the 2023 first round picks.

To be honest, I'm just glad it's over. I still have the same reservations I did when all this chat started up. He's still closing in on 40 years old, he's still, as a former co-worker of mine used to say, "a little bit strange guy." On the other hand, he seems genuinely enthusiastic to be here, and he clearly feels like he has something to prove. Two other positive things that I was happy about.. he had the good sense not to take Joe Namath up on his offer to un-retire number 12. That was awfully nice of Broadway Joe, but Rodgers was smart not to bite, instead he'll wear his college number 8, and he was emphatic that he respected that 12 should stay up in the proverbial rafters.

Also he seemed genuinely interested in doing what he can to help Zach Wilson reach his potential. I realize that most Jets fans are ready to write off Wilson as another Jets draft bust, but he is still just 23, (he'll be 24 on August 3) and not every QB can develop quickly. There's another QB the Jets drafted who everyone cast off as a bust. His name is Geno Smith and he's doing really well in Seattle. Maybe with Rodgers on the team, Wilson can develop at his own pace and learn from a guy who has done it before.

This is of course all best case scenarios, and that's what makes this time of year so much fun for football fans. I've suffered through so many of these, that it's difficult to work up big enthusiasm for it all. But I have to admit, I'm glad the trade happened, because if it had fallen through, that would have been a disaster.

As for the draft, Tim (who watched most of the first round and was providing updates as I was watching my Rangers implode), asked me how I think the Jets did. I tried to explain to him that one of the most colossal wastes of time and space is grading a draft as it's happening. I've seen the Jets have what was called at the time A+ drafts and here we are, 54 years later, still waiting for another Lombardi Trophy.  If he wants to ask me how we did last year, when Joe Douglas drafted both the Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the year in the same round, not THAT I would give an A+ to. I'll grade this year's draft next January, how bout dah?

BASKETBALL- How 'bout dem Knicks?

I was at McFadden's on May 4, 2001 when the Knicks were playing the Raptors in a winner take all Game 5 at MSG. The Raptors eked out a 93-89 victory that sent the Knicks home for the summer. Little did I know that night that game essentially ended a 15 year run of Knick playoff games. They have spent the overwhelming majority of the 21st Century on the outside looking in. And in the unlikely event that they made the post-season, they were usually sent packing in the first round. A quick check of basketball reference.com has confirmed these suspicions, only the Knicks of 2012-13 made it out of the first round, they lost in the second round to the Pacers.

So watching the Knicks lay the Cleveland Cavaliers to waste the other night was a rare (to say the least) treat. The Cavs were favorites, plus they were the team that ended up acquiring Donovan Mitchell from the Jazz last off-season. Mitchell, a NY Native who practically begged Jazz GM Danny Ainge to trade him to the Knicks, (which the former Celtic was of course loathe to do) was the Cavs best player this year, and of course seemed primed to stick it to the Knicks. You know how the old saying goes, If you can't join 'em, beat 'em.

Instead, with the exception of Game 2, where they got their doors blown off, the Knicks took care of business, returning the blowout favor with a 20 point win last Friday, pulling away after a close game on Sunday, and then clinching the series on Wednesday night, when the Cavs pretty much waved the white flag.

So now, it's a definite throwback to the golden days of yesteryear, as the Knicks will take on Miami Heat, who pulled off an even bigger upset by knocking off the NBA top seeded Bucks in 5 games.

Remember how Pat Riley weaseled his way out of the last year of his Knicks contract to become head honcho in Miami. Of course the Knicks and Heat met in the playoffs in 4 of the next 5 seasons, with the Knicks taking 3 of those, and only a bull$hit ruling against them by NBA Commissioner David Stern after a fight, prevented it from being 4 out of four. These were the Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, Jamal Mashburn Heat vs the Patrick Ewing, Allan Houston, Larry Johnson (and for the last two Latrell Sprewell and Marcus Camby) Knicks. Those games were classics.

The Heat have a player, Jimmy Butler, who was unbelievable in the series vs the Bucks. Hopefully the Knicks can figure out how to stop him and get themselves a trip to the Conference Finals. Things didn’t start off so well today, as the Heat took Game 1. Hopefully they tie it up on Tuesday.

HOCKEY- Rangers-Devils head to Game 7

This time last week I was feeling pretty good about my Rangers. They had dominated the first two games of their series against the Devils, and had played well enough to win Game 3, an OT loss at the Garden.

Then the Devils dominated Game 4 and the Rangers inexplicably no-showed for Game 5, and just like that, the Rangers were on the brink of getting sent to the golf course.

I’ll give the Devils credit for tightening up their defense and making fewer unforced errors, but what I’m not going to do is turn their young goalie into the second coming of Patrick Roy. Akira Schmid has been good, but the Rangers didn’t get a lot of good shots at him from what I saw.

Saturday night with their backs to the wall, like they usually are in the playoffs, the Rangers did manage more pressure on Schmid and they came away with a 5-2 win to send this series to a Game Seven. How do I feel about it? Depends on which Ranger team is going to show up to the Rock on Monday night? The one from Saturday night or the one from last Thursday? I really don’t know.

THIS JUST IN- from WM two weeks ago...

And while I have a very hard time seeing anybody beating the Bruins 4 times out of 7 games, that too has happened, in the not too distant past. Remember, the record the Bruins just beat was held by the 2019 Tampa Bay Lightning, who after winning 62 games and accumulating  128 points, proceeded to get swept in the first round by the Columbus Blue Jackets. I'll be shocked if the Florida Panthers pull that off, but also recall who won the President's Trophy last year. That's right, the Panthers.

Well it happened again folks, the President Trophy jinx continues. Though I said it was tough to see the Bruins losing, I did point out that it had happened not too long ago. Tonight, the 8th seeded Panthers beat the NHL Record setting Bruins in OT to win Game 7 and the series.

65 wins, 135 points, and out after one round.
Unreal.

I know someone who is heading down to Dallas this week for a work conference, and I asked them while they were down there to gauge how the fandom feel about the Rangers $185 million man going on the 15 day injured list with "and elbow issue" ?

I sent a message along. "get used to it"

Weekly Mail April 23, 2023

Hey:

Back when I was on the Track and Field team in high school, one of the events I would always get a kick out of watching was the Steeplechase. It was a 3000 meter run where you had to clear four stationary hurdles. Unlike the hurdles you have to clear as a sprinter, you can step on the top of these hurdles and push off. That comes in handy when one of the hurdles is in front of a pit filled with water.

I was always convinced by long legs and big feet would get caught on the hurdles and I would fall flat on my face, so I never volunteered to do any of that. But Tim said he wanted to try it so his coach put him in this past Saturday. Since it was a fresh/soph event, it was 2000m. Tim took 4th place but more impressively (at least from my perspective) he did a great job clearing the hurdles. I had a good spot right at the water pit, and he was able to just about clear it with both feet.

Good times.

Onto the week that was. And it wasn’t a good week for those who think Captain Orange won the 2020 Presidential Election (he didn’t BTW)

LAWSUITS: Dominion vs Fox.

Last Tuesday, just as the defamation trial was about to begin, the judge announced the Fox News agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787.5 million to settle the case.

Though part of the deal stipulates that Fox is not admitting guilt in this matter, make absolutely no mistake….Fox wouldn’t have paid this money if they thought they could win this case. Not only that, but many of the hosts and senior executives admitted in private that Orange and his minions were full of crap. Tucker Carlson, arguably the biggest blowhard on the network, sent a message to fellow host Laura Ingraham “Sidney Powell (Trump lawyer) is lying…I caught her”

Tucker knew, Ingraham knew. Even the head honcho himself, Rupert Murdoch knew, calling Trump’s claims “really crazy stuff.”

Fox settled because they didn’t want to see Tucker, Sean Hannity or Murdoch have to take the stand, which they surely would have had to do. And again, they wouldn’t have shelled out over 3/4 of a billion dollars if they thought they had a prayer of winning this case.

Also last week, the crazy My Pillow guy, Mike Lindell, was ordered to cough up $5 million to a software engineer who challenged Lindell’s nonsensical claims that the voting machines were manipulated to favor Joe Biden.

Lindell had launched the “Prove Mike Wrong Challenge back in August 2021 offering $5 million reward for anyone who could prove that his theories and data were not valid.

Software engineer Robert Zeidman entered his own 15 page report that in essence called BS on all of Lindell’s so called data. The panel of judges one of whom was a Lindell attorney declined to declare Zeidman the winner, so under the guidelines of the challenge, Zeidman filed for arbitration.

The three arbitrators ordered Lindell to pay Zeidman.

"He proved the data Lindell LLC provided, and represented reflected information from the November 2020 election, unequivocally did not reflect November 2020 election data," the arbitrators wrote. "Failure to pay Mr. Zeidman the $5 million prize was a breach of the contract, entitling him to recover."-NPR.com

Lindell of course is refusing to pay, saying he has even more data to back him up, and says that he expects this dispute with Zeidman to end up in court.

Both Dominion Voting Systems who just took the Murdochs for $787 mil, and Smartmatic, who has a pending suit against FOX, have also sued Lindell. If FOX’s lawyers thought they couldn’t fight these lawsuits, does Lindell think his team of legal eagles has a chance? $5 million is a drop in the bucket compared to what these two companies are looking to take Lindell to the cleaners for.

I hope Kari Lake is paying attention to all this down in Arizona. She keeps insisting she got cheated out of being Arizona’s governor, she may have a few lawsuits on her hands too.

THIS JUST IN-Good thing I held off publishing this, as Tucker Carlson and FOX news have “mutually agreed to part ways.” Translation-You just cost me $787 million, and even your ratings can’t justify that.

BASEBALL: Scherzer’s sticky situation

Last Wednesday, Mets starting pitcher Max Scherzer was ejected after umpires deemed that his hands were too sticky. Recall that a couple of years ago, MLB began outlawing spider-tac, and sticky substance that pitchers were using to get a better grip on the ball.

Scherzer was insisting that he wasn’t using anything except the rosin bag that is on every big league mound. That is there to help pitchers dry their hands from sweat. Apparently, and I never knew this, you are only allowed to use a certain amount of rosin. If the umpire deems that you used too much, he can toss you from the game. That appears to have been the case here.

Scherzer had been warned at least once to wash his hands.

ON WFAN, Boomer Esiason and Greg Giannotti seemed adamant that Scherzer was in the wrong. Giannotti especially was going on the theory that Scherzer was convinced they weren’t going to check him again, so he got his hands all stickied up again.

Here’s my issue….. as I said, I had no idea there was a limit as to how much of the rosin bag a pitcher can use. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who wasn’t aware of any limits. I feel like this has to be made clear, and at best it’s confusing.

More Baseball…. I had heard last weekend when the Mets were in Oakland, that the Mets TV announcers had to leave the booth because there was a foul stench in there. I didn’t find out till someone sent me a video of Chris (Mad Dog) Russo ranting on about it on ESPN that it was possum poop. ESPN show a video of a possum living the wall of the TV Booth in Oakland Coliseum.

Lo and behold the A’s announced they had purchased land in Las Vegas with the purpose of building a 35,000 seat baseball stadium there, joining the Raiders as another team from Oakland moving to Sin City. Is it just a coincidence that a day or so after Russo exposed the possum living in the stadium walls, the team said “that’s it, we outta here”? Should those living in Vegas hoping to land an MLB team be grateful for the possum that drove the A’s 550 miles southeast? You be the judge.

**********************************************************************************

One of the reasons this is late is that every time I got to publish something else happens. First Tucker Carlson got fired, then Don Lemon got fired from CNN and then Aaron Rodgers officially became a Jet.

We’ll discuss all that next weekend.

It’s Hailing Hot Dogs in Philly

Hi Everyone:

We took off last week for Easter. I hope everybody had a great Easter/Passover.

The last couple of years, I was lucky enough to have all or most of Easter week off from work. This year I didn't, and of course wouldn't you know we had three days of summer like weather here in NY. Saturday naturally when I was off it was back to April showers.

I was off on Thursday the 6th, which was supposed to be Opening Day at Citi Field. But the night before, they made the decision to postpone it to Friday. This screwed me 9 ways to Sunday.

I had planned to put my car in the shop on Thursday and pretty much do stuff around the house, then either grill up some hot dogs for Timmy and I, or walk over to Nathan's. The next best thing to being therie in Flushing for Opening Day is relaxing in front of the TV at home.

But since someone decided to move the opener to Friday, it screwed up all my plans. Friday that week happened to be Good Friday, which meant no Hot Dogs. (We’ll have more about hot dogs later) All the stuff I put off till Friday, I now had to scramble to do and still hopefully catch most of the game.

What was worse, there wasn't a drop of rain on Thursday. In fact the temperature had gotten into the 70's on Thursday while barely getting to 60 on Friday.

On WFAN, Evan Roberts suggested that the Mets, having come off an absolute a$$-beating in Milwaukee, did this to give their beleaguered pitching an extra day of rest. The team insisted that they had forecasts suggesting torrential rain and felt they were doing the right thing by not letting their fans sit through a rain delay in April.

I get all that, but shoot, if you are going to make a move like that, you better make sure that it actually rains that day. I know weather forecasters are more often accurate than not, but whoever the Mets were using wasn't even close.

It was aggravating and embarrassing. Again.

POLITICS: Trump Indicted:

I didn't bother with a special on Saturday night, mainly because I didn't really feel like pouring over the indictment if I'm being totally honest here. Even as I write this today, I still haven't delved into enough of it to give you my $0.02 about it. So, I'll get into what I did observe..

1) The coverage on the cable news networks was as usual, over the top. I read that CNN followed Captain Orange as he got into his limo at Mar-A-Lago, rode with his motorcade to the airport in West Palm Beach, watched as he and his staff boarded Air Trump, and watched the plane take off.

Then they had another crew on the ground here in NY as the plane landed at LaGuardia Airport. he got off the plane, got into his car, and they followed him all the way to Trump Tower. That was Monday.

The next day it was the same thing... Out of Trump Tower, into his limo downtown to the courthouse. When it was over, they followed him by helicopter from the courthouse to LaGuardia. I saw the highlights, can you imagine sitting there and watching all that?

2) When he was being led into the courtroom, the court officer let the door go. A couple of commentators pointed out that the officer didn't hold the door for the former President. I don't know if I ever saw that before. Actually I remember one time George W. Bush was exiting a stage, and couldn't get the door open. Pretty sure that was in China.

3) I thought this was funny... the pea-brained attention whore representing the 14th congressional district in Georgia came to our fair city to show support for Orange. In an interview later on, she called New York "a terrible place"  Said Seth Meyers on his late night TV show.. "Joke's on you...because once you think that, you are officially a New Yorker."

She's the most repulsive person from Georgia since John Rocker, racist sacks of $hit, the two of them.

To sum up, in doing a little bit of research on this whole deal, I mean, there is no doubt Trump paid this gal off to keep quiet, and I'm fairly certain he used campaign funds to do it. I'm no legal eagle, and I've read in different places that DA Alvin Bragg may have a hard time proving that what Trump did was technically against the law.  On the other hand, I'm not buying the whole, "This is just emboldening him and his supporters crap" either  His supporters are going to support him no matter what he does. For f-cks sake, he tried to overturn an election and incited a terrorist attack against the US Capitol. You think his paying off some floozy so that she wouldn't rat him out to his wife is going to move the needle here? C'mon!

We'll see how this all turns out.

HOCKEY/BASKETBALL: Playoff Preview:

All 5 of the NYC area winter pro sports teams made the playoffs this year. That hasn't happened since 1994. Obviously if things turn out like 1994 here in NY, I'll be quite happy.

But if I'm being honest here, all 5 teams have a very tough road to hoe here. The Rangers and Devils are about as evenly matched as you can be. I think the Rangers have a slight edge in goal, and I'm hoping that the experience of playing 20 playoff games last year, with the additions of Vladimir Tarasenko (2019 Cup Winner) and Patrick Kane (3 time Cup winner) gives them an edge over the playoff novice Devils. But Jack Hughes is a stud, and if he gets hot and the goalie plays well, it could be lights out early. The Rangers could win the Stanley Cup or be on the golf course by next week. I realize that's a cop out, but that's just how tight the competition is.

The Islanders scrapped into the playoffs, and while they are pretty heavy underdogs to the Carolina Hurricanes, stranger things have happened before. I've seen teams that had to fight to get in make strong, deep playoff runs. It stands to reason, as they have technically been in playoff mode for a few weeks now. It's not like they have to ratchet things up.

As for the NBA,  the Knicks are playing Cleveland in the first round, while the Nets take on the Sixers.

Game 1 for the Knicks in Cleveland was a nail biter, but they managed to hang on and win 101-97. It was the first time they had won a Game 1 in the playoffs since 1999. Of course, they haven’t played that many playoff games on the road or otherwise since 1999. But they looked pretty good Saturday night. Contributions all around.

I didn’t see the Nets- Sixers Game 1, but given that Philly won by 20, I’d say the boys from Brooklyn have their work cut out for them.

PROMOTIONS GONE AWRY: Phillies Hot Dog Night

The Philadelphia Phillies back on April 11th held a Dollar Dog night promotion at Citizens Bank Ballpark. Fans could purchase a tube steak for $1.00, where one would normally cost $4.00 or so.

At first the 3 buck incentive seemed to be a success, as the stadium sold out on a chilly Tuesday night against the lowly Miami Marlins.

But this is Philly we are talking about here, and as the Marlins were putting the finishing touches on an 8-4 win over the defending National League champs, fans were taking their dollar dogs and throwing them at each other, turning Citizens Bank Ballpark into the cafeteria at Faber College.

The night I went to see Razor Ray McGarvey and the Cooper Union Pioneers play at the Brendan Byrne Arena (what I like to refer to as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre-1995 version) they had $1.00 hot dogs, which to be honest was the second biggest thrill for me that night, (seeing my best bud playing on an NBA court was obviously number one) Ed (Auggie) DePuy claims I put away “about 47 $1.00 hot dogs” that night. It was more like 5 or 6, but if he wants to tell my grandkids that I made like Joey Chestnut, well I won’t stop him.

The civilized folks of East Rutherford didn’t toss their dollar dogs onto the court, even when things got tense between the Pioneers and Pratt Institute. But remember, they booed Santa Claus in Philly once, so I guess we have to factor that in too. They are planning two more Hot Dog nights soon. Let’s hope cooler heads prevail when it comes to the hot dogs.

That’s all we got this week folks.

Weekly Mail April 2, 2023

Hi Everyone:

Some good things happened this week...baseball season started on Thursday, including a win for the Yanks in the chilly Bronx, and a win for the Mets in Miami.

But the week started on another tragic note. One that has become all too common here in America. Another school shooting, this one in Nashville.

NASHVILLE SCHOOL SHOOTING- 3 nine year old babies and 3 adult teachers were gunned down by a 28 year old former student at the school.

I decided a few school massacres ago not to mention the names of the vermin who commit these atrocities, but for some people felt it was necessary to mention that the shooter was a biological female who identified as male. To me that's irrelevant.

What is relevant that this animal was carrying three guns-an AR-15 rifle, an AR pistol and a handgun. At least two of the guns were purchased legally.

Back in 2020, I reluctantly joined Twitter, because Tim's school was posting a lot about his class which was graduating in the throes of the pandemic. I tried to be careful about who I was following, I kept it to friends, journalists I respected, and an occasional athlete.

Unfortunately some of the journos and jocks I follow also follow some of the lowlifes in politics. So some of their tweets end up on my feed.

Now, one of the people's who tweets I saw was Lauren Bloebert, and I only mention her because, gun nut and idiot that she normally is, her initial tweet only said that "my prayers are with beautiful children whose lives have been lost their families & the first responders who are dealing with this tragedy in Nashville"

Empty words coming from someone who take family pictures with her young kids holding automatic rifles? Sure. But as God as my witness, downright classy compared to some of the other shit these scumbags were posting. Many of them went right after the fact that the shooter was transgender.

Anything else. Always anything else than the fact that they were able to get an assault rifle. As easy as buying a can of soda.

And until something is done about THAT, the rest of the stuff is just noise. In the meantime, three more of our most important resource we have, our children were gunned down doing nothing more that going to school. Another heartbreaking, horrible day for our country.

***********************************************************************************

I'm going to hold off discussing Captain Orange's indictment till next week. I want to wait till he is formally charged and the indictment is unsealed. Both sides of the aisle are giving their $0.02, but there are people defending Orange )and attacking Alvin Bragg) without even knowing what the hell he is being charged with.

*********************************************************************************

Let's get to more fun stuff....

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: I'm not even going to get into the tournament. Let me put to you this way..If you had Florida Atlantic or San Diego State going to the Final Four, you either pulled those schools out of a hat, or you had a few glasses of personality when you were filling out your bracket. . I know my brackets weren't the only one that burned faster than the map of the Ponderosa at the beginning of Bonanza.

But I do want to mention that my beloved Red Storm of St. John's pried away Rick Pitino from the Iona Gaels a couple weeks ago,as predicted by the great Steven Butler in the Irish Echo a few years back,.

I had some high hopes for Mike Anderson when he took over the Storm from Chris Mullin 4 years ago, but he was unable to have any real success.

Pitino comes back to NYC 34 years after breaking my heart leaving the Knicks for Kentucky in the midst of their rebuild. I was happy to see he still had the magic touch at Iona that he had at Providence, Kentucky and Louisville. While he may hot have gotten the boys from New Roc to the Final Four like he did the aforemnationed programs, he seems confident he can bring winning basketball back to Queens.

And if  Pitino can manage not to turn the Italian restaurants on Utopia Parkway into his personal brothel,  St. John's may have a great chance to return to the glory days of the 80's. And college basketball can become relevant around here again.

I meant to write about this a few weeks ago....

TV REVIEW: Special Forces-World's Toughest Test

I'm not really much of a reality show buff. I hate to admit that I got into the first season of Survivor back in 2000. It was one of the few things I enjoyed that summer. Back in 2004, 2005, Imus used to have Captain Orange on to preview that night's episode of the Apprentice and then the following day, Imus and Charles McCord would do a 5 minute sponsored review of it, and that was the extent of my interest in that show.

But this show on FOX caught my eye because one of the participants was one of my heroes, former Met Hall of Famer Mike Piazza. Just getting to root him on again was enough to get me to tune in.

As the name of the show suggests, 16  "celebrities" went to a remote training site in Jordan to see if they could survive 10 days of Special Forces training, under the supervision and orders of former Special Forces operatives.

In addition to Piazza, other athletes competing were former NBA All-Star Dwight Howard, former Pro Bowl receiver Danny Amendola,  X-Games skier Gus Kentworthy, World Cup winner Carli Lloyd and Gold Medal Winning gymnast Nastia Liukin. There were three singers: Former Spice Girl Mel B (Scary Spice), Jamie-Lynn Spears (Brittney's little sister) and Montell Jordan (This is How We Do it) . There were four reality show vets, Kate Gosselin (Jon and Kate plus 8) Hannah Brown (The Bachelorette) Dr. Drew Pinsky and Kenya Moore (Real Housewives of Atlanta).  Rounding out the 16 competitors were celebrity chef Tyler Florence, 7th Heaven star Beverly Mitchell and (I kid you not) Anthony "the Mooch" Scaramucci. If you want to binge watch this and don't want to know how it turns out, scroll down to below the stars.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Kate Gosselin and Dr. Drew, got hurt on day one and were forced to drop out.  Montell Jordan got hurt on day two and Tyler Florence waved the proverbial white flag.

In the beginning of episode 3, Jamie Lynn told Piazza she missed her kids too much and despite his pleading with her to stay, she quit. Scary Spice somehow snuck a pack of smokes into the camp, and though she didn't get busted for them, she quit shortly thereafter. Liukin quit on that episode as well.

Beverly Mitchell was barely keeping up and kept breaking down in tears. She finally cried uncle in episode 4.

Everybody made it through episode 5, but the Mooch was starting to really struggle. Whatever you think of him, at 58, he was the oldest one still on the show and the other trainees really started to rally around him. Mooch bowed out at the beginning of episode 6.  Kenya Moore joined him shortly thereafter, despite her having passed many of tests. She had a trick knee that was acting up.

So through 6 episodes, my man was still going strong....well, not really. He wasn't passing many of the tests. Though the instructors had the authority to dismiss you from the competition, they generally didn't unless you were hurt. They would occasionally call the recruits into a meeting. A couple of times they called Dwight Howard in to give out to him about his attitude (which if I recall correctly, more than one of his basketball coaches had to do as well)

When they called Piazza in the first time, I swear I almost broke down myself. They asked him why he wanted to do this competition and he said that he had always admired the military. He also said that his father had been drafted for the Korean War and was buried with full military honors. He said that many times in his life he felt guilty that he hadn't served his country the way his father had. I can say I have had that exact same feeling myself...many times. I can also say I was at Shea the night Piazza hit that home run against the Braves, first game after 9/11. If Mike feels he owes America anything, I'll say he made a huge payment that night. I'm sure I'm not the only one who felt that way.

They had a drill where the recruits had to go into a building filled with gas, find a medical bag, and find a way out. Piazza went in, had trouble finding the bag, and upon finding it, tried to get out the front door, which was now locked. He kept ramming it and ended up knocking himself out.

He never really recovered from that. He was talking about quitting at the end of that episode, but didn't. In the beginning of episode 8, he told the underwear clad Bachelorette Hannah Brown (not that I noticed) that he hadn't slept. He decided to pack in in right there. Carli Lloyd called him a warrior and he went and turned in his arm band.

At that point I pretty much stopped watching. I found out that in the same episode, Gus Kentworthy almost went into anaphylactic shock and was forced out. That left Howard, Amendola, Carli and Hannah.

The two male athletes quit in the final episode. They put headphones on each of the four that had a baby crying and the sound you heard when dialing into AOL back in the day over and over. This was too much for Amendola who begged out. (It reminded me of when the US Military used Nancy Sinatra's These Boots are Made for Walking to smoke out Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega.)

The winners such as it was were Hannah Brown and Carli Lloyd. Look, Lloyd is a world class athlete, one of the best players on one of the great soccer teams ever assembled. Hannah Brown was Miss Alabama. Call me a cold hearted skeptic, but you can't convince me that they scripted it so that she'd be one of the last ones standing.

So for that I don't recommend binge watching this one. It had it's moments, but I wouldn't waste my time again.

Both our baseball teams got off to good starts this week. The Mets took three out of four in Miami and the Yanks took 2 of 3 from the Giants. Mets home opener is Thursday.

And again, if you had UCONN vs San Diego State as your final, I hope you tipped your bartender.

Next Sunday is Easter, so I may not publish, but I also want to give my $0.02 about the Trump indictment, so maybe we'll do a Saturday Night Special. We shall see.

Happy Passover this week. (Wednesday evening)
