Year in Review Part One

January 3

Keep Mekhi Beckton and Quinnen Williams. Everyone else can go. Including Darnold.

And they did! Darnold was traded to the Panthers in April

January 10

This game on Nickelodeon was fun to watch

Noah Eagle (Ian's son), Nate Burleson, and Gabrielle Nevaeh Green (star of Nickelodeon's All That) were in the booth for the Saints-Bears Playoff game. They did a great job.

January 19

Went to bed last night to the news that the Mets GM sexually harassed a female journalist.

Going to bed tonight seeing that George Springer is signing with the Blue Jays.
I should just stop checking the news around 7 PM. Let the bad news wait til the morning.

There was bad news a-plenty in Flushing this year. The George Springer news was the least of it.

January 22

Far as I’m concerned, he’s still the HR King
RIP Hank Aaron

And always shall be

February 8

RIP Mr. K.
Kevin Mahoney and Lenny Bishop introduced me to him when I was in 8th grade. Then I would see him at Mass when I worked at Ascension. As humble as he was brilliant.

We lost Tom Konchalski in February. The outpouring for him from all over the country was amazing

February 13

The most honest thing the man ever said was "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and not lose any voters" If you needed any more proof, just look at what happened today

Captain Orange's 2nd annual Impeachment trial ended in his being not convicted.

February 20

The outdoor game in Lake Tahoe between the Golden Knights and the Avalanche is stopped after the first period due to poor ice conditions caused by the sun. The game will resume at midnight est. (9 PM PST)

It ended about 2:30 in the morning. I know because I stayed up like a dope and watched it

February 28

I liked him on the NFL Today.

Irv Cross 1939-2021

March 19

One of my Final Four teams is already out, and the crazy thing is, I hardly give a spit.

I can't get worked up over my brackets anymore. There's no skill involved.

March 31

Steve Cohen at the buzzer!

Signed Francisco Lindor right before the self imposed deadline of Opening Day. Good move? Hard to say so far, but we have 10 more years to find out

April 3

UCLA-Gonzaga. WOW!

One of the best college basketball games I've ever seen.

April 5

Darnold traded to Panthers.

See my post from January.

and
Horrible f’ing loss tonight. Horrible!

Mets had their opener delayed for a week because of COVID, then blew another Jacob deGrom masterpiece against the Phillies. 6 shutout innings all for naught. It was a harbinger for the season to come

April 29

“The Jets will become the first team in the common draft era to select two quarterbacks in the top three within four years of each other.”
So I’m supposed to be excited about Zach Wilson?

Their incompetence is historic

May 1

I'm picking Soup and Sandwich to win the Kentucky Derby

Spoiler Alert: He didn't win. I'm not even sure he finished the race TBH

The Mets announcers ability to criticize the umpiring even when it benefits the Mets never ceases to amaze me. Ron Darling's just accused the umpire of making up his own rules.

This was regarding a base running play where the Phillie runner was ruled out of the baseline, when he clearly was not. Many announcers whose clubs would benefit from that call would say nothing. The Mets guys said it was wrong

May 5

WTF????!!!!! Rangers Fire JD and Gorton

I didn't like this move. Even with the Rangers playing well, I still don't like it.

May 23

Our AHA Walk in honor of Rebecca on Thursday was amazing!
It was so great to be back with family and friends after a year of fear and isolation. Thank you to everyone who came out to walk. Seeing so many smiles in real life felt good after all this time!
And thank you to all who donated to our team. You raised over $9,000

There really are no words to express how grateful we all are for all of you.

June 1

Montreal is about to send the Maple Leafs home for the summer.
Toronto hasn’t won the Stanley Cup since 1967.
I’m not great with math, but 2021-1967 I believe =54!!!!

Meaning the longest draught between Stanley Cups is now shared by the Rangers and Maple Leafs. Yes these are the things that make he happy in sports nowadays

June 5

The Jets shotgunning beers at an Islanders playoff game will probably be the highlight of their season.

Who says all my predictions are wrong??????

June 15

I’ve known this man since the two of us were about 10 years old. He is one of the best people you’ll ever meet, and tonight he’s a hero who saved this young lady’s life. Please take a minute to read this story.

Dave Cook from 112 Street in the Rock saved a young woman's life in the cafeteria of the school he works at. He deserved all the accolades he received and then some

June 18

First day vs last day of 7th grade.

Holy Growth Spurt Batman!

June 19

Tell me you went to McClancy with out telling me you went to Msgr. McClancy. Class of 91! Tag yourself and others! Thanks Haughey and Jon!

Great night. Great place. Great guys

Weekly Mail Christmas Eve Special 2021

My chins and I at the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, December 11, 2021

Thank you for tuning in.

It was 5 years ago tonight, December 24, 2016 out of sheer boredom, that I came up with this Christmas Eve blogpost. I was stuck at work at the Post and just decided to put together a list of my favorite Christmas songs, and to maybe come up with a couple of my own.

This year we decided to revisit our list of Christmas songs, and move some things around. We’ll repost the two song parodies I did, and show a classic Christmas video. And more!

Enjoy!!

Christmas Song Top 10-2021

1) Do They Know It's Christmas Time-Band Aid- Yeah maybe one of these days, I'll get so sick of this song that it will drop down the list. Hasn't happened yet. Still soounds great 37 years on...

This is a trivia game that my good friend Jenn Ciardullo created a few years back.

Fill in the blank: Who sang what lines in Do They Know It's Christmastime

1) It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid
At Christmastime, we let in light and we banish shade.

2) And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time.

3) But say a prayer, to pray for the other one
At Christmastime

4) It's hard, but when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window.

4) and 5) and its a world of dread and fear
where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears

5) and 6) and the Christmas bells that ring there
are the clanging chimes of doom.

6) Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you!!!

BONUS QUESTION: There was one American act that was in Band-Aid. Name them

Answers below.

2) Happy Christmas (War is Over)  - Plastic Ono Band-   Another song I can never get enough of. And I feel like we need the sentiment of the song now more than ever...

3) Oh, Holy Night -Josh Groban - This song has moved into the money, replacing Paul McCartney. I'm sorry the older I get, the more I appreciate it.  As my old friend Emily E. O'Connor said of it "It tells you everything you need to know about what Christmas means" I can't put it any better than that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17kiIIxSdC0

4) Wonderful Christmastime -Wings- I feel bad knocking Macca down a notch, especially having spent some of my Thanksgiving weekend with him and the boys. But this is still catchy and fun. I just don't feel the need to hear it as much as I used to.

5) Fairytale of New York-The Pouges with Kirsty McColl-  Now this jumped up a whole 5 notches since 2016. During the early days of the pandemic, when they created the awesome Coronavirus Virtual Bar, DJ Teddy Rauert would play this song during his set. Didn't matter if it was Christmas time or Easter or 4th of July. And you know what? It works all year round. Still captures the thrills and the challenges of living in NYC.

6) 7 O'Clock News/Silent Night-Simon and Garfunkel- On one side of your speaker, you hear Simon and Garfunkel singing the classic Silent Night. Out of the other speaker, you hear a newscaster (Charlie O'Donnell of Wheel of Fortune fame according to Wikipedia) reading the news headlines of the day, including the death of comedian Lenny Bruce, the indictment of serial killer Richard Speck, and former Vice President Richard Nixon predicting 5 more years of war in Vietnam.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNyqlx0--i0

Depressing, but powerful.  So let's pick it up a little.

7) Christmas in Hollis- Run DMC - I'm not much of a rap fan, but this is the closest song to represent my hometown. The official Christmas song of Queens. Ray told me I had to put this up higher or else I'd have to turn in my Queens passport.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR07r0ZMFb8

8) O Come O Come Emmanuel-Joan Baez- Every year at least once or twice, my hippie parents would gather my sisters and I around the entertainment system, bust out the the incense and the lava lamps, and pop  "A Joan Baez Christmas" into the cassette player

Ok so most of that story is bull, but we did have A Joan Baez Christmas in our collection. It was probably a buck and a quarter at some supermarket, which is most likely the reason someone in my house bought it. This is the one song  I remember from it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq_6seRbB2U

9) Blue Christmas -Elvis/Porky Pig- The Elvis version is a classic by itself, but the Porky Pig version is hysterical.

10) Grandma got Run Over by a Reindeer Elmo and Patsy- Yes, this song may be coming off the list in a couple years, but it's hanging on. Still makes me chuckle.

FLASHBACK: THE LOST ENDING TO SAME OLD LANG SYNE

5 years ago Weekly Mail discovered the lost lyrics that ended Dan Fogelberg's Christmas Eve Classic Same Old Lang Syne

First here is the song with lyrics.

now after she drives away the lost lyrics pick it up from there...

She started driving on the rain slicked road
After finishing her beer
Her eyes grew heavy and she fell asleep
And she crashed into a deer

The cops arrested her for DUI
She spent Christmas day in jail
And now the profits from this record's sales
Are going towards her bail.

Maybe it's best they left the song as is.

From 2017: A Hoity Toity Christmas

A HOITY-TOITY CHRISTMAS

Sung to Holly-Jolly Christmas

Have a Hoity-Toity Christmas
'Cuz even though it's cold,
Santa brings me lots of things
Made of 14 karat gold

Have a Hoity-Toity Christmas
And check out my new boat
It cuts through ice and goes real nice
with my new full length fur coat

Oh-ho there's a foot of snow
Out in my front yard
But not a snowflake on my Lexus
Or the bow on top of my new car

Have a Hoity Toity Christmas
And don't you shed a tear
Don't resent that the 1%
Will have a hoity toity Christmas
next year

WEEKLY MAIL: THE CHRISTMAS MOVIE

I have a great idea for a Christmas movie. Hear me out……

Chelsea, a woman in her late 20’s comes back to her small hometown from a big city (either NY, LA or Chicago). She’s successful having shot up the corporate ladder, and she seems happy. But there’s something missing and she can’t quite put her finger on it.

On her way home she stops into her town’s local supermarket and runs into her high school sweetheart Stan, who the assistant to the assistant manager of the produce section. He tells her that he’s hoping to get promoted soon but he doesn’t really get along with the store’s owner, who happens to be his father.

She heads home to her parents house and is greeted by her younger brother Stu, who just flunked out of community college and is now thinking of joining the Army. Mom and Dad, Betty Sue and Barney and both disappointed about Stu and now worried sick that he’s going to end up getting killed in some foreign country. They are overjoyed that Chelsea their child who isn’t a screwup is home for the holidays.

But Betty Sue starts to pick up that Chelsea isn’t happy. After some coffee and prodding, Chelsea tells her Mom that she’s working 80 hours a week for a hedge fund owned by a 30 year old trust fund baby who seems like he’s always hitting on her.

(OK we better back date this to about 2013, or better yet, let’s make it during the Bush administration, yeah that’s it! That way we can have Stu wanting to go after Osama Bin Laden, but Mom and Dad worried that he’ll end up in Iraq. I like it! I like it!)

Betty Sue urges Chelsea to move back home to Vermont, (or Minnesota or Oregon depending where “the big city” is) but Chelsea can’t just pack up and leave her dream job. She’s way too important to the company, at least that’s what Alister, her scumbag boss keeps telling her.

The Christmas jamboree is coming up tomorrow at the town hall. Everyone is going to be there including Stan, whose Dad is a) closing the grocery store early and b) donating the beer, soda and pretzels.

Chelsea reluctantly decides to go. She doesn’t feel like talking about her life in the big city, but she wants to see her old friends, none of which have left Happy Hollow (I’m totally winging this).

At the Jamboree, Chelsea gets a bit drunk and ends up dancing and eventually making out with Stan. It doesn’t really matter, since she’s single and heading back to the big city for New Year’s Eve. (Or should we give her a guy in the big city? Nah, she’s working too many hours to date)

But now as Christmas approaches Chelsea is in a pickle. Head back to the big city where she’s rich but miserable? Or stay here in Happy Hollow, VT (MN, OR) and be poor but happy. And what about Stan? Was this just a one time fling or are the old feelings coming back?

To throw another wrench into the works, Alister the scumbag hedge fund honcho back in the big city was arrested on the 23rd for insider trading and cavorting with prostitutes. They want to replace Alister with Chelsea as head of the hedge fund and they need her back in the big city the day after Christmas.

Chelsea had all of this on her mind as she and her parents and Stu headed to Christmas Eve Services at the Church of Miracles. As Reverend Bob talked about the true meaning of Christmas and following your heart and like that, Chelsea had an epiphany. She call the big shots in NY or LA or Chicago the day after Christmas and tell them to take their offer and sh….we’ll she’ll say thanks but no thanks. She’ll start her own business right there in Happy Hollow. She’d tell Stan how she felt about him and he could help start the new business. Stu could take over for Stan as the assistant to the assistant manager of the produce section.

The whole town met up around the Christmas tree in Happy Hollow Square. They sang Joy to the World….no Hark the Herald Angels Sing…..no no no, Angels We Have Heard on High!!!!

Glooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooria! In excelcis Day yay yo!

THE END

Whaddaya think?

What? It’s already been done? A million times on the Hallmark Channel?

Well  never mind then. We will tweak it for next year.

CHRISTMAS VIDEO

Fans of the Twilight Zone will recall the classic Night of the Meek episode, where a drunken department store Santa, miserable because of all the poverty in the town where he works/lives, finds a bag of unlimited gifts.

The original starred Ed Norton himself, Art Carney. The version we’ll be showing here tonight is from 1985, with Soap/Empty Nest star Richard Mulligan as Santa.

Hope you all enjoyed this.

Merry Christmas

Weekly Mail December 19, 2021

Hey:

So here we are with our Fall Finale. I know it's cliché, but I can't believe how fast the end of this year has gone. I feel like I was sitting watching Notre Dame-Florida State, and bemoaning the end of the summer just a couple weeks ago. That was September 5th.  And now here we are, less than a week away from Christmas.

I'm going to take a minute here as we wrap things up for 2021 and make the same plea I made back when we did our season finale in August. Please get the COVID-19 vaccine. I have tried not to get into it too much, because I'm not looking to get into a fight here with anyone.

But on Friday, 21,027 new cases of COVID were reported here in NY.  And I believe that the reason many of those 21.027 aren't going to die a painful death is because of the vaccines.

I'm vaccinated and boosted. I'm not worried about getting it. If I get it, I'll likely survive it. I have two fears. One is that I'll get it and give it to someone who is unvaccinated. And to be honest, I'm not even that worried about that. If at this point you're not getting vaccinated, well I hope you don't get COVID. But if you do, you made your bed.

My other fear, and this really is the one that makes me worried, is that our hospitals are going to be overwhelmed again, and that our doctors and nurses are going to end up working themselves to the bone.

Again, if you have questions, talk to the doctors. I've yet to talk to one who has said not to get it. And I talk to doctors all the time.

The US is at 804,000 COVID-19 deaths. That's less than 200,000 away from 1 million people. My wish for 2022, is that we don't reach that number. I still believe that we can avoid that grim milestone.

Please.

OK, I'm putting that soapbox away now. Let's get to some other topics of interest....

BASEBALL: Mets get a manager (finally)

Christmas came about a week early for some of us Mets fans, as Santa Steve Cohen delivered us a legit, big league manager, who has a proven track record of getting the most out of his teams.

William Nathaniel "Buck" Showalter was announced as the new Mets skipper on Saturday afternoon. Of all the things the Mets have done this year, most of them have pissed me off. This is the complete opposite. This was the one move I really wanted them to make.

I know there are going to be critics out there who say Buck hasn't won a World Series. Well, I'm pretty sure he would have at least gotten to one in 1994*, before the game was shut down due to a work stoppage (sound familiar?)

And the Diamondnacks won in 2001, a year after Buck was let go. But he basically built that team, remember, Showalter was the first person D'Back's owner Jerry Colangelo hired in the entire organization. That championship team had Buck's finger prints all over it.

But to me the most important aspect of this whole deal is that we finally have an adult in charge again. We haven't had that since Terry Collins. I think the Mets played hard for Mickey Calloway, but his lack of experience cost them a few games, not the least of which was the Mets batting out of order in 2018. I still can't believe that happened in a major league baseball game. And Louis Rojas I still think may one day turn out to be a good manager, but he lost the clubhouse last year and he too made some strange moves.

I'm not saying Showalter is going to push the right button every time, but I think he'll push it more often than not. And we shouldn't have anymore squirrel/rat debates going on during games either.

I know I shouldn't get my hopes up again, but I just feel this was the right move at the right time. We'll see how it all shakes out.

ROCK AND ROLL: Boss' Big Deal..

Right before I went to bed on Wednesday night, I looked at my phone and saw a Breaking News Alert from CNN with a picture of Bruce Springsteen and my heart sank to my stomach. I thought for a second that The Boss had died. After everything else that has gone on the last couple of years, of course I was inclined to think the worst.

Alas, it was quite the opposite, Bruce is not only alive and well, he became even more insanely rich than he already was.

Springsteen sold the rights to his music publishing to Sony Records for $500 million. Why that news couldn't wait till the morning is something we may never know. But yeah, that's a lot of broccoli.

I'm not even that big a Bruce fan. The stuff he does that I like, I really like. But he has written and preformed a TON of stuff in his almost 50 year career. I feel like the true blue Springsteen fan looks down on the casual fan. I remember when he first went to Sirius/XM Chris Mad Dog Russo had a show pretty much devoted to Bruce, and he and the callers were discussing songs I had never heard of and probably never heard since.

Still, I was relieved that he was still with us. And happy for him that he has half a billion bucks in the bank. Plenty of money to go down to the well tonight and drink till he gets his fill.

FOOTBALL: Give the kid a break…

After last week’s latest Jets disaster, a basically no-show performance against the New Orleans Saints, the press around here began wondering aloud if the Jets had once again blew it in the draft by taking Zach Wilson with the 2nd overall pick.

“He’s not playing like the 2nd overall pick in the draft” I heard Boomer Esiason bemoan on the Boomer and Gio show on the FAN. Mike Lupica in his Sunday Shooting from the Lip column asked if it was possible that the Jets could have drafted two top 5 QB busts within 4 years.

Great idea a-holes. Let’s run another young QB out of town.

I’m no expert, but I’ve seen some things from this kid that make me think he could be a really good player. He made a couple plays against the Dolphins today that had to be seen to be believed. Yeah I know the knock on him is that he can make the spectacular plays, but not the easy ones. Well, isn’t it easier to work on the easy ones if the big ones come naturally?

I realize the media’s job is to report what they see. I’m not suggesting they run cover for the Jets. But as a fan, I’d implore the organization to ignore the noise and stick with the plan. Joe Douglas has the track record, and as much as I hated the Jamal Adams trade, those picks are coming due this year, and with the Seahawks struggling, they are going top be good picks.

Nobody is more frustrated about not making the playoffs as I am. But I’ve seen some positive stuff from the Jets this season, their record not withstanding. They got to give Wilson a fair shot. Another rebuild is not acceptable, so why don’t we let this one finish up? That’s all I’m saying.

All right folks, so we are going to do a Christmas Eve Special I've decided. We're going to update some lists and links and try to find some surprises. Then we'll have our year in review.  The Christmas Eve Special will be Thursday Night. Till then..

Stay Safe

and Have a Great Week

*I’m not as convinced they would have won the whole thing.. That 1994 Expos team was awesome

Weekly Mail December 12, 2021

 Hi Everyone:

Has anyone else noticed that the last few Santa-Cons have all been held in unseasonably warm weather? I've looked back at a few of the posts I've made regarding Santa-Con, and I've mentioned that part of the issue is that it's been warm for the second Saturday in December. I don't know if that's climate change, or just God's way of having fun with these folks who dress up in Santa outfits and proceed to get blitzed all over Manhattan. I actually didn't even get the privilege of riding into town on the LIRR with them this year, as the family and I are spending the weekend at my sister in law's Manhattan apartment.

Just hope they are not sweating their Jingle Bells off too much.

Onto the week that was..

And when the Beatles tell you

They have the word Love to sell you

They mean exactly

What they say...

from I Dig Rock and Roll Music by Peter, Paul and Mary

So as I eagerly awaited the arrival of Peter Jackson's remaster of the Beatles "Let it Be" Film sessions, which was titled Get Back, I went into it with a grain of salt. This was being pitched almost as alternative facts (as much as I hate to use that term) According to Jackson, and the two surviving Beatles themselves, this was going to show that things weren't really as bad as they were made out to be. That it wasn't all arguing and finger-pointing and all that. And I mean, my question was, If everything was so honky-dory in Pepperland, why did they still call it quits by the end of the year?

Well I just got finished watching the whole thing, which I honestly didn't think it would take me this long, but it ended up being almost 8 hours of footage. Originally when they were going to put in in theaters, it was going to be maybe 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Then when Jackson said it would be streamed on Disney Plus, he said he had 6 hours of footage. But it was much longer. Not that I'm complaining, but it was hard to do in one sitting.

If you've ever actually seen Let It Be, (and I have, I found it on YouTube once*) the quality of the sound is very poor, it's almost completely out of sequence and yeah, there are parts where the guys have clearly had it with each other.

This new documentary goes completely in order, a calendar from January, 1969 is shown marking off the days. There are notes put in to help describe what's going on. (they also issued a warning that the movie contained scenes of sensitive topics, strong language and smoking. I can't imagine 50 years ago, that anyone associated with the project would ever think there would be a warning about their smoking.)

The idea was that the guys were going to give their first concert since 1966, and they were going to do a TV show that would show them rehearding the new material they had for the concert. This goes through how that all evolved and you can see that for yourself. Here were some things though that I found interesting...

1) At one point in the first part, Paul McCartney and John Lennon are working together on what would become John's song on the Imagine Album, Gimme Some Truth. That's such an angry John song, watching Paul singing it with him was to say the least, strange.

2) In the Beatles Anthology, Paul and George Harrison seemed to complain a bit about Yoko Ono being at John's side constantly. It didn't seem to bother them too much here in Get Back, and there were a few times where she wasn't around. The two or three times Linda Eastman came, it seemed like her and Yoko got along well.

3) George walks out of at the end of part one. He doesn't make a scene or anything, he just says "I'm leaving", John asks when and George says now. That's on Friday the 10th. The film notes that John, Paul and Ringo head to George's house on Sunday the 12**, and that "the meeting did not go well." At the beginning of Part 2, it's Monday the 13th, and John says if they can't get George back, they will bring in Eric Clapton to replace him. Paul looks devastated about the thought of this being the end of the band as constituted.

4) George took credit in the Anthology for bringing in Billy Preston. Get Back says Preston came in on his own, being in London for a TV Special, decided to drop in on the guys, whom he had met in Hamburg, West Germany in 1962. What's of no doubt though, once Preston added his organ to these songs, they came to life. To me, he's the closest thing to the 5th Beatle there ever was.

5) In Part 3, Paul brings Linda and Linda's 6 year old daughter Heather into the studio on Sunday, the 26th. She was sitting next to Ringo Starr on the drum set, and he was keeping her entertained. At one point, they start rehearsing Let it Be, and Paul says something to Ringo about his drumming. Ringo shoots him a look like "Dude, I'm up here babysitting your girlfriend's kid,*** give me a f-cking break will ya?"

There was simply so much, I'm probably going to have to watch it two lot three more times before I can really give an honest assessment of it. These are just the things coming to my head now. But I will say this...I was surprised with how much they all cared about each others songs. The impressions I got through the years was that they felt they were becoming each other's backing band, but from what I saw here, they all had suggestions for each other's stuff, and for the most part, they took the suggestions to heart. Like I said, I went in skeptical, but somehow they pulled I’d off. You really do feel like they still we’re getting along.

If you have the time to binge watch it, by all means. I couldn't do it. I mean don't get me wrong it was fascinating and there were a bunch of wow moments, but it's a ton to digest. It is definitely worth watching though.

OBITUARIES

Bob Dole- By the time he ran for President against Bill Clinton in 1996, Bob Dole, the Senate Majority Leader from Kansas, seemed to epitomize the old man yelling "Get off my lawn!" This was a combination of his age, his monotone voice and that his opponent was some 23 years younger. In their 3rd and final debate, Dole had been hammering away at Clinton's ethics or lack thereof, when the question came up of whether Dole might be too old to be President****. Clinton looked at the camera and said "I can only tell you I don't think Senator Dole is too old to be President. It's the age of his ideas that concern me."

Dole grunted something about Clinton not having any ideas so that's why he was saying Dole's were old. Didn't matter, to me any shot Bob Dole had of becoming President ended that night. And I'm not sure that was necessarily a bad thing.

But considering him nothing more than some curmudgeon? That was unfair.

First of all, the man was a genuine war hero, having lost most of the use of his right arm towards the end of WWII.

Secondly, as tough and partisan as he could be, he also helped get many deals done. You want to talk about a lost art. As much as they went after each other, both Clinton and Dole had a definite respect for one another. I remember in 1996, even when it looked like the fur was flying, Dole when asked how he felt about Clinton personally, politics and ethics aside, said something to the effect of "I like him. He's got a firm grasp of the issues and he's smart as a whip." I'm not sure I have the quote exact, but that's pretty close.

And what a sense of humor. You have to be able to laugh at yourself a bit if you are 75 years old and doing Viagra Commercials. And how about the Visa commercial he did where they ask for his ID and he says, "I just can't win!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKjmxbhzlLI

I say this all the time.. whenever we lose someone from the greatest generation, it's a sad day, there are so few of them left. When you lose one who also served his country as a dignified statesman, especially in this day and age, it's even sadder.

Michael Nesmith- The first time I watched The Monkees, was on Channel 9 back in the mid 80's. Apparently MTV had started re-running the show that had originally aired on NBC from 1966-68, so they were once again becoming popular. Having no idea what passed for comedy in the 60's as a teen ager in the 80's (Austin Powers was still a decade away) I had no idea what the hell I was watching.

But the music was always good. And eventually I started to get the humor. And of the four of them, the one who cracked me up the most was Mike Nesmith.

He just looked and sounded different. I almost felt like Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz and Peter Tork could have been brothers. I know Davy had the British accent, but Mike had the Texas twang. Plus he was so much taller than the others and he wore that green wool hat.

With their popularity increasing because of MTV, the Monkees got back together and even put out a single that made it to the Top 20 in 1986. Nesmith didn't re-join the band then, and the rumors were that he wasn't getting along with them. Fact of the matter was, he had his own production company and was involved with films, music, TV all sorts of stuff. He was already wealthy, as his mother was the inventor of white-out. (True Story) and his various work with music videos is what is widely regarded as the groundwork for what became MTV.

He said the reason he didn't join the other 3 in 1986 was that he was just too busy.

He did join them for a TV special in 1997 that even I thought wasn't that great, but it was good to see them together again.

And speaking again of the Fab Four, if you ever see the video they did for A Day in the Life off Sgt. Pepper, Mike Nesmith is seen hanging out with his buddy, John Lennon.

Just a remarkable life. I was really bummed when I heard he passed on Friday.

It seems it happens nowadays as often as Hailey's Comet comes along, or a total solar eclipse, but something happened on Saturday that really hasn't happened a whole hell of a lot lately...

A professional sports team from New York won a championship! I know, will wonders ever cease?

Last Sunday as I was watching the latest installment of the NY Jets pooping the bed, I started to flip around and saw that NYCFC, one of our two MLS franchises (That's soccer FYI) was getting ready to play Philadelphia for a berth in the MLS Cup against the Portland Timbers. I figured just knowing that NYCFC was in the semis would doom their chances to advance to the finals, so I didn't bother watching.

Turns out they beat Philly to advance to the final. So I rolled the dice and tuned in Saturday afternoon to watch the MLS Cup Final.

So first things first..how cool was it to watch a championship game on a Saturday afternoon? As much as I was rooting for New York, it looked like the people in Portland were having the time of their lives. And it was raining like it was here in NYC, but it was also 20 degrees cooler.; That had to be uncomfortable, but they didn't seem to care. That stadium was rockin.

And wouldn't you know, with less than a minute to go in the first half, NY scored to take a 1-0 lead into the break, We were 45 minutes and change away from the MLS Cup! And I couldn't believe how excited I was.

Of course only a team I root for could mess things up as spectacularly as NYCFC did. First of all, the officials added 4 minutes of extra time which till my dying day I will never understand the logic. To me that gives the whole thing a WWE feel to it. Let's tack on time till the other team scores.

And of course that's exactly what happened. There were literally 4 seconds left when Portland scored to tie it up. NYCFC was insisting there was a penalty on the play, but the refs weren't having it.

So then you have two 15 minute overtimes, in which I was certain Portland would score multiple goals. The combination of the Timbers and the stadium coming to life, plus those NYC guys who weren't beefing with the refs were in such shock that it looked like they could barely move.

NYCFC's goalie Sean Johnson made a couple of spectacular saves to keep hope alive for us. Then it went to a shootout. Once again Johnson was the man, stopping the first two Portland free kicks. NYCFC made the first one, missed the 2nd, then made the next three, not even giving Portland their 5th penalty kick, and viola! NYC has it's first champions since the Giants in 2011.

Back in 2003, my sister did an internship for MSG-TV, and I drove her to a couple of Red Bull NY games. (I think they were still the MetroStars back then.) And when I found out that the new NYC soccer team were partially owned by the Yankees and they were going to play in Yankee Stadium, I figured I'd stick with the Bulls.

But I've justified my jumping on the bandwagon thusly.. The Red Bulls now play their home games in Harrison, NJ. Harrison is west of the Meadowlands, so that really is New Jersey. NYCFC is in New York, I mean you can't get more NY than the Bronx right?  I know the Jets practice in Florham Park, which is even further west than Harrison but well, they play at the Met Life Stadium so that's that.

Billy, I can call you a lot of things. One thing I can’t call you is a front runner—my late father in law, Tim Connors

Anyway, I wonder if my new soccer team, the MLS Cup Champion NYCFC will get a parade down the Canyon of Heroes. I don't see why not, we haven't had one in a while.

Anyway, let's here it for our hometown soccer club!!!

On a serious note, our hearts are breaking for the victims of the tornadoes in the Midwest. Kentucky seems to have taken the brunt of it. There’s never a good time for that to happen, but to have it happen during the holiday season is especially tough. The pictures and video are just awful.

Fall finale next week. Till then…

Stay Safe

and Have a Great Week

*The Beatles apparently went through great lengths in recent years to keep Let it Be out of the public’s hands, I caught it on YouTube before the admins took it down.

**I watched that part with Tara and Tim and I pointed out that while John, Paul and Ringo were trying to talk George into coming back, the Jets were beating the Colts in Super Bowl III. They didn’t seem to care. I don’t blame them.

***Paul and Linda would marry two months later, and Paul would legally adopt Heather shortly thereafter. A sure fire way to piss Paul off is to refer to Heather as his stepdaughter

**** Ah the golden days of yesteryear, when 73 was considered by some to be too old for the Presidency. Both candidates in 2020 were older than Dole on Election Day
