I wrote this 4 years ago today....
Unfortunately, it wasn't the final shot. It wasn't the final kick in the midsection. Turns out, not even close.
And in the four years since I've written that, he has only gotten worse. Tempted as I am to rehash it all, there's no point. If you didn't vote for him, you already know it. If you did vote for him, you know it and you don't care. You wanted law and order, so you voted for a convicted felon. Some of you even bragged about that.
He has no business being sworn in as President of the United States today, he should be in prison.
Today's his day. He can have it.
I'm instead going to talk about the man he is replacing. A man who, I believe when all is said and done is going to remembered as one of the great Presidents of all time.
Four years ago, on the day he was to be sworn in as our nation's 46th President, Joseph Robinette Biden faced the following circumstances...
1) Washington DC was practically on lockdown because of an insurrection that had taken place 2 weeks before.
2) The country was still in the grips of COVID-19.
3) There was no proper transition, because Biden's predecessor falsely claimed that the 2020 election was stolen from him.
4) For the first time since 1868, the outgoing President didn't stay for the inauguration of his successor, because he was too much of a sore loser to do so.
And with all that, Joe Biden was able to lead us out of the pandemic, lower unemployment to record low levels, pass an infrastructure bill, and rebuilt our alliances abroad.
Joe Biden did all this while under constant assault from far right nutjobs like the hand job queen from Colorado, the pedophile from Florida (who thankfully was forced to withdraw as Attorney General nominee) and the whore from Georgia, attacking him and his family daily.
He wasn't perfect. The 13 servicemembers who were killed in Afghanistan happened on his watch. Yes, he was acting on a deal that had been brokered between his predecessor and the Taliban*, but I still believe Biden should have kept a peacekeeping force there.
Inflation has eased under President Biden, but prices are still high. I blame the pandemic and the way it was mismanaged by the previous administration, but I don't doubt people are still struggling.
What I also don't doubt is that Joe Biden had a lot more compassion, a lot more determination to make the country and the world a better place than Captain Orange ever had and ever will.
There's a part of me that says I will never understand the hate and vitriol that was thrown at President Biden these past 4 years, but the only way to fully understand it is to realize that MAGA isn't just a movement, but a cult. Captain Convicted Felon Orange has convinced his followers that there was some sort of Biden Crime Family when nothing of the sort existed. If you line up, side by side the crimes Biden and his family committed vs the crimes that Trump and his family committed, it's not even close. If you can't see how much worse Trump is. than you are either dishonest or a fool.
At 82 years old, maybe it wasn't wise to expect him to be able to lead for another four years, I get that. Replacing him with a 78 year old who rambles on incoherently is just more hypocrisy, right up there with electing Trump because he is pro-police, while 5 Capitol Police officers died at the hands of a mob he created. Who believe Jesus sent him down here, while he cheated on all of his wives, including his current one with a porn star. Again, a convicted felon is now our law-and-order President, and we are all supposed to be OK with that.
I could never hate Joe Biden. Not after everything he has been through, unimaginable loss, his first wife and a daughter killed in an accident, his oldest son, dead too young because of cancer, his other son, struggling with addiction. Somebody once said, “If you can’t get along with Joe Biden, there’s something wrong with you.”
That was Lindsay Graham. Now he’s one of Trump’s biggest lackeys.
At the end of Oliver Stone's movie about Richard Nixon, Nixon is walking around the White House shortly after he had gone on TV to announce his resignation from the Presidency. He stopped at the portrait of John F. Kennedy and said "When they look at you, they see who they wish they could be. When they look at me, they see who they are."
Maybe that's it. Maybe we look at Captain Orange and we see what we wish we could be. Filthy rich, living in a mansion in Palm Beach, a trophy wife.
The fact of the matter, most of us have had to deal loss and pain. Most of us have had to work hard for the little we have. Most of us love our families unconditionally. Trump has had everything handed to him. Biden hasn't.
I'm proud to have stood with Joe Biden these past four years. He was a good president and a better person. The fact that someone like Donald Trump can be elected president after everything he has pulled is sad reflection of where our country is at.
But, well, here we are. Enjoy your day.
*And who ever thought we would see the day when conservatives praised their president for negotiating with the Taliban? I'm old enough to remember when Republican presidents overthrew the Taliban.
