Weekly Mail August 5, 2018
Hello Everyone:
So I want to first of all, thank all of you for your kind words, thoughts prayers these past couple of weeks. I promised that I would respond to every text, e-mail, FB post and phone call and I think I have. You have no idea how each of those have helped our family through this terrible time.
Two days after we lost Becky, we were all gathered at Krissy and Steve's house, and I watched as my sister Katie set up the Go Fund Me Page for Reading with Rebecca, the page dedicated to raising money to supply the library at Our Lady of Hope in Middle Village with new books. Katie set the goal at $2,500.
Well you can tack a zero onto the end of that, because thanks to the generosity of so many of you, over $25,000 was raised. Unbelievable!
Years ago, Karl and I went down to the World Financial Center to watch Imus and his crew as they had their radiothon for the Tomorrow's Children's Fund. I remember Imus saying that he knew that many of his listeners weren't well off and that they might not be able to donate and that if they simply spread the word or just made someone aware that this was going on, they were helping as much as someone who made a donation.* I contrasted that with people who used to go on the Jerry Lewis telethon and demand that you call and donate. "Don't just sit on your couch doing nothing. Get on the phone right now" one moron breathlessly yelled.
To all who contributed, and all of you who took a minute to share the page on your Facebook pages, on behalf of my family, from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you so much.

The Cruelest Month.
Whoever reads this knows how much I love summer.
Summer means longer days. No school. The pool, the beach. Cookouts. Warm weather. It's easy to fall in love with June, July and August, and to dread September.
But to be honest, July has been a month that has kicked my a$$ pretty bad over these past 45 years.
I lost my grandfather the day of the great blackout, July 13, 1977, his death was unrelated to the blackout, but still that day carries double the pain for us as it did for most of NY.
In 1998, a former girlfriend of mine was killed in a car accident at the age of 24. We hadn't been close, but it was still heartbreaking. That was July 9.
Three years later, my best friend's brother in law died in a motorcycle accident. July 15.
And now this, the cruelest blow of all.
I suppose there will come a day when I will enjoy the month of July. And it's not like other months haven't brought tragedy or heartache. But right now July is on the $h-tlist. And it's not coming off anytime soon.

A couple of random notes...
I have had my beefs with the Daily News the past few years. I can't stand Shaun King and now the daily paper is as thin as the Saturday paper. I held off on bashing it because a) I don't want to come off as shilling for my beloved Post, and 2) I had a bunch of friends who worked there, people who helped me out when I first started at the Post. People I hope to be friends with for a long time, because they are the best of the best.
But a couple of weeks ago, a bunch of evil a$$holes from a company called TRONC, laid off over half of the remaining staff at the News, including many of my aforementioned friends. I don't know what their endgame is, but I for one will never pick up another copy of that rag. Nor will I read their online content. free or otherwise. Mike Lupica now joins Mike Francessa as two washed up blowhards who I probably should have quit on years ago, but stuck with them till now. What a disgrace they are.
A few weeks ago, I stated that this Mets team was the worst I had ever seen, giving the firecracker throwing, bleach spraying 1993 Mets a run for their money. Many of you weighed in with your picks for worst Met team ever, of course some of you old timers went back to the 120 loss Mets of 1962. I've only been around since 1973 (only...$h-t that's 45 years ago LOL) and I've been a fan since 1982 (a year they lost 98 games).
I'm sticking to my guns on this one. We've got a pitcher with an ERA under 2.00 who has a losing record, we just lost a game this week 24-5 (something even those bums in 1962 didn't pull off) we've batted out of order this year (again Casey Stengel at 75 years old managed not to do that) and now, I read that there is a shrink offering free counseling to Met fans? Yes folks, it's come to this.
Crazy.

My friends, I was going to keep writing up until August 12, but in light of everything that has gone on these past few weeks, I think we'll call this our season finale. I have thanked all of you for your love and support through this awful time, but I also want to thank all of you who read, commented and enjoyed Weekly Mail this year. There was a brief moment when I thought about scraping it all because it just seems like all the news is bad and funny stories were more and more hard to come by. But this is something I enjoy doing, and I'd enjoy it even if I didn't have an audience. (I'm thrilled that I do have one just to be clear). Writing has always been my catharsis. So on we go.
We will return with our annual rememberance of 9/11. And then our Season Primere will be September 16.
For now, thank you again. Enjoy the rest of the summer.
