Weekly Mail August 13, 2017
Hey There:
Friday night I went to dinner with my Woodside crew. Razor Ray, Auggie and the Ace were kind enough to schlep out to the sticks to hang with me at JPaul's. Now I usually do JPaul's with my buddies Dan (No Shot) Unverzagt and my fellow Met fan and Rockaway (well Breezy Point) transplant Paul Lehner. But it was a tad early for those two night owls, so I kept it to us 4 lunatics.
JPaul's isn't Donovan's and it never will be, but it's definitely my favorite LI hangout. And the guys were raving about the food. Ace and Auggie did the schnitzel, and Ray and I did the tidbit sandwiches. We washed them down with some beers, good stuff.
I walked them over to the RVC train station, and we saw their train pulling into the station where we had no chance of catching it. So it was onto Cannon's Blackthorn for a nightcap, then they headed back towards the city and I took the N15 back to Oceanside. It was 9:37 PM. What a bunch of nightcrawlers we are. Lock up the women and children when we come to town! Ha!
The reason I was delayed sending this out was because I had written nothing about what happened in Virginia on Saturday. Part of me wanted to avoid it, because it's just terrible all the way around. But I feel like it would be irresponsible of me not to weigh in.
My understanding is that the march that was to take place was by white supremacists protesting the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee.
Let me be 100% crystal clear on this. I consider, White Supremacists, neo-Nazi's and the KKK etc. to be lower than the scum of the earth. I lump them right in there with ISIS and al-Qaeda as people this world can do without. Some people took to social media to blast Donald Trump for not using the words White Supremacists the way he and others mocked Barack Obama for not using the term Islamic Fundamentalist Terrorism. Well, I call it like I see it, and have no problem blasting both of these bottom feeding groups as pathetic wastes of life.
And the animal who rammed his car into the crowd of protesters, killing that poor woman and injuring scores of others, should be treated and tried as a domestic terrorist. Period. End of discussion.
My original political rant was going to be about President Trump and his dangerous trash talk to North Korea, but as so often has been the case with this nut, just when you think things are as bad as they can get...
Anyway,
BASEBALL: The Mets Disaster:
This week will mark pretty much the last four games I care about this year as a Met fan, the home and home series with the Yankees.
I'm pretty much done talking about the Mets for the year. They are so obviously throwing in the towel that they are almost not even worth watching.
Over the winter, many of the talking heads here in NY were talking about how they HAD to trade Jay Bruce, even if they got nothing in return. Some said that probably figuring he couldn't play in NY, most figured that by keeping him, they would create a logjam in the outfield with Conforto, Cespedes and Granderson. I could dig that, but I thought trading him for a box of used jockstraps was stupid. He's a perennial 30 HR 90 RBI man, surely someone would be willing to give something of value for him.
To the Mets credit, they didn't bite at a bad deal in the off season and Bruce turned out to have a solid year. 29 HR's and 75 RBI's. Thank God too, because besides Michael Conforto, the rest of the team has sucked. Yoenis has been a bust, Grandy has been inconsistent, and everyone else has been hurt.
So what do these a$$holes do? They trade Bruce to Cleveland for a minor league pitcher who sucks.
Spare me the "you don't know how this kid is going to turn out crap" too. He was a 30 round draft pick with a losing record and a high ERA is class A ball. This was a bad trade, made by a franchise who just doesn't care anymore.
So maybe what's left of this team can do me a solid and maybe make this season just a smudge less of a disaster by beating those Bronx Bastards twice, three times, or well they lost on Monday, so three of four is the best they can do.
Get swept, and that will just cement 2017 as the worst year the Mets have ever had.
Sorry again for the delay.
have a Great rest of the summer
