Weekly Mail October 18, 2020

Hi Folks:

First a programming note: We're not going to publish next week, because we are going to be working on our election special for November 1. We are going to keep this one politics free. So lets see how that goes.

FOOTBALL: Jets waive Le'Veon Bell:

This move in and of itself doesn't bother me, though watching some of Bell against the Cardinals last week, I thought he looked better than he was given credit for. I think what bothers me is the sum of all that went into this.

First Bell sits out a whole season because he couldn't come to terms with the Steelers. The Steelers let him go and the Jets signed him to a 4 year deal with $35 million in guaranteed money. This after hiring a pass happy coach that none of us wanted in Adam Gase (more on him later)

The combination of a second year QB, an offensive line that resembled Swiss Cheese, a clueless head coach, and injuries reduced Bell to 19 mostly unproductive games. But it seems the organization's last straw with him was when he liked a couple of tweets suggesting he'd be better off somewhere else. We're not even talking about what that lowlife Jamal Adams pulled, going on Twitter and telling Cowboy fans he was trying to get the Jets to trade him.

Talk about 21st century problems.

So because he liked these tweets, the Jets had no choice but to eat that $35 million and send Bell packing. I know, I know, it's not my money but how stupid do the Jets look know? Bell is off to play for the defending Super Bowl champs, and 2020 Jets are being insulted by the 1996 Rich Kotite 1-15 Jets.

You know, every year the surviving members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins drink a toast whenever the last team that season loses their first game. In 2007, they had to wait all the way to the Super Bowl before they could toast, Most years it's within the first 5-6 games. Hearing the 1996 Jets talking this week, they're looking to do the same thing if these Jets go 0-16.

They won't. They'll f-ck that up too. Probably cost themselves a shot at Trevor Lawrence. Because only the very best franchises get to draft two franchise QB's in the span of 4 years.

But for S's & G's, lets say Gang Green runs the table here and loses all 16 games and gets the number 1 pick. What do they do with Sam Darnold, the original franchise savior? Maybe trade him out west?

I'll tell you what, if that's what happens, I'll be rooting for him. He shouldn't suffer because he was drafted by a team owned by clueless morons.

I know, lets draft this kid, fire the coach after the kid's first season, hire a coach who just got run out of town by his last team, sign some free agents, including a disgruntled running back who held out the previous season, conduct a draft, then fire that GM, and hire a new GM who didn't draft either the franchise QB, or sign the big money running back. Then after going 7-9, promise to sign the teams best player, then trade him when he spouts off on social media, then when the team looks like they couldn't beat the Washington Generals, cut the big money running back.

Trevor Lawrence might want to stay in school. He might want to go for his Masters to avoid this team.

BASEBALL:

Tampa became America’s baseball team Saturday night when they sent the lyin, cheatin, losing record Astros back to Houston. It was not without a fright though, as the Astros came back from 3-0 down to force a Game 7. Thankfully, the Rays were able to hold them off. At press time, the Dodgers and Braves we’re playing their own Game 7, winner to take on Tampa.

RIP Joe Morgan: One of the things that did my heart good this week, was reading the obituaries and tributes to Joe Morgan who died Sunday at age 77, and seeing them focus on his playing career, which was phenomenal, and not his broadcasting career, which, well...

Morgan was one of the best second basemen in baseball history. A two time NL MVP, five time gold glove winner, and winner of two World Championships with the Reds in 1975 and 1976. In 1976, he hit .327 with 27 HR's and 111 RBI's. Granted, that lineup was stacked, but those are incredible numbers for anyone, much less a guy who stood 5'7.

I remember towards the end of his career in the mid 80's, someone (I think it might have been Vin Scully) saying Morgan would make a great broadcaster because "he knows baseball and he loves to talk".  There were times during his career in the booth that the former was questioned, but the latter was never in doubt.

I knew a few guys who couldn't stand him, but he never bothered me too much. The criticism that he was anti-NY was probably accurate, it also didn't make him unique amongst national broadcasters.

Either way, I'll choose to remember him as a Hall of Fame player and a World Series champ.

Joe Morgan

MUSIC:

So, I caught some of the Billboard Music Awards the other night.

The radio near my office plays 103.5, so I hear all the current faves. I got to see some of them as well on Wednesday.

Post Malone who sings Circles (I call it Runaway because that's like the only word  understand in the song) seems like a nice kid. He's covered in tattoos, but he can rap, play country and play easy listening. Versatile and talented.

Doja Cat performed. I kind of like her song Say So, it has kind of has a retro feel to it. She's also quite attractive (I'm allowed to say that because Tara's the one who said it first).  But as Imus used to say, she needs a checkup from the neck-up.  As per Wikipedia, her social media was filled with slurs against LGBT, and earlier this year she was calling COVID-19 a hoax. She's since apologized for the poor choices of words. Here's hoping she's cured of her foot in mouth disease and goes on to a successful career.

And then there was Lizzo.  The Good as Hell singer.  I may have mentioned before that song could have come in handy when George Bush 41 was trying to arrest Manuel Noreiga in Panama, and the Marines were blasting Nancy Sinatra's These Boots are Made for Walkin over and over again at his compound till he couldn't take it anymore and gave himself up. Lizzo's screeching "I do my hair toss, check my nails, baby how ya doin" 100 times a day would get me to give up whatever I was hiding, I can tell you that.

But the other night, when she won for Top Song Sales Artist. she gave a really inspiring speech about "women who refused to suppressed."  She encouraged women, especially women of color, to "use their voice, whether it's through music, protest, or your right to vote, use your power, use your voice, and refuse to be suppressed."  Great stuff.

But then after thanking Billboard and saying God Bless y'all, she walked off the stage saying "Byyyyye Bitch!"  Couldn't she just left it at God Bless y'all?  That would have been perfect.  Maybe I'm a prude or I'm getting old. Or maybe the speech wasn't intended for me so I should just shut up.

Well what fun is that? If I had a daughter, I'd play the speech and cut off the end. And who knows? Maybe one of these days, when her song comes on, I'll stop giving out my name, rank and serial number.

Lizzo

Did anybody see that video of the guy being chased by a mountain lion in Utah?  I don't know how that guy had the presence of mind to keep recording. He was clearly terrified. I'd be dead in that situation, because I'd either try to run (which they say is the worst thing you can do) or I'd be frozen in fear and get attacked that way.

The experts say the man in the video did the right things. He walked slowly and deliberately and he didn't take his eyes off the mountain lion. They also said that the mountain lion went back when she felt the man was far enough away from her cubs (or whatever mountain lion babies are called).

That's why I don't do camping.

Weekly Mail October 11, 2020

Hello:

So, I'm thinking about cutting back on the politics for the next couple of weeks. On Sunday November 1, we will have our election special. This week we will give our commentary on last Wednesday's VP Debate, but I'm thinking next week and the following week, we'll try to keep it a bit light, if we possibly can. We may not have a choice, as things just get nuttier and nuttier in Washington. But that's what I'm hoping we can do.

Anyway, let's get to it shall we.

POLITICS: THE VP DEBATE RECAP

1) It's really a sad state of affairs when I found myself giving props to Vice President Pence for doing things such as a) thanking the moderator b) greeting Senator Harris, c) thanking Senator Harris and Vice President Biden for their get well wishes to President Trump and d) congratulating Senator Harris on becoming the first woman of color to be nominated for VP. In other words, the things that most other normal people would do, but things Pence's boss, Captain Orange, wouldn't do in a million years.

2) Having said that, Pence's constant interrupting of Harris, and answering questions that weren't asked were more up the alley of our current President, right out of his playbook.

3) While I believe Harris won the debate because she had the facts on her side while he lied his ass off, I thought she would do a better job. The narrative that Trump/Pence and the rest of the GOP are harping on is that Trump closed down travel to China and saved millions of lives. Which of course is nonsense. He restricted some travel from China, not all of it, and thousands of people were still coming in. Harris needed to point that out. I also think when Pence accused Biden and Harris of plagiarizing their COVID-19 plan, I would have told Pence that there is no such think as plagiarizing a blank sheet of paper.  She wasn't terrible, but she could have done better.

4) My reaction to the fly was the same as I'm guessing a lot of peoples, "Damn, there's a fly on my TV." But when he started moving his head and the fly was clearly on top, it made for some comic relief. Someone said the fly was the clear winner in the debate. I would have loved to hear debate moderator Susan Page say "Vice President Pence, your time is up and there is a fly on your head."

5) Speaking of Susan Page, how do we think she did the other night? Chris Wallace was lambasted by both sides, but I haven't heard much complaint about Page. I know Pence and Harris weren't as out of control as the other two, but Pence went over his time constantly. I really believe nothing short of a mic drop button is going to solve that issue.

BASEBALL: RIP 2020 Yanks

With their loss to Tampa on Friday night, the Yankees have now gone 11 seasons without a trip to the World Series. They are now approaching the same drought suffered between 1964 and 1976.  As a Met fan of course, it's hard to feel sympathetic, especially since the Yanks have been to the ALCS in two of the last 4 seasons. But the goal in the Bronx is World Series or bust, so that makes this a hard pill to swallow for the Yankee die-hards.

I was as pissed as anyone when my team couldn't make a playoff bracket that invited half the sport's teams to it. But as hard as it might be, I encourage my Yankee brethren to write this year off as an aberration. That's what I ended up doing. It's like the old fable about the Fox and the Grapes.

And trust me, if the Braves happen to win the whole thing, I'll be the first one to remind those tomahawk-chopping nitwits that their two World Championships in the past 25 years both came in abbreviated seasons. Remember, they played 144 games in 1995 because of the strike. I don't think it's going to come to that, I believe the Dodgers will send the Braves back to Dixie, and Tampa will finally put the Astros where they belong. But I also went 1-4 in my DS predictions so for Petes sake, don't go by what I say.

But seriously Yankee fans, as aggravated as you might feel because your closer spit the bit for the second year in a row, (and you know I feel your pain there as well), I would look to next season for redemption. Assume we get a full proper spring training, a full slate of games, (and hopefully fannies in the seats) 2021 has got to be your year. If not, then you gotta talk about at the very least, sending Aaron Boone packing and maybe even Brian Cashman. I just wouldn't do that now.

BOOK REVIEW: Three Ring Circus: Kobe, Shaq, Phil and the Crazy Years of the Lakers Dynasty..  By: Jeff Pearlman

This is the second book about the Lakers that master sports storyteller Pearlman has written. The first one Showtime, about the Magic, Kareem, Riley Lakers of the 1980's was a classic. And while I suspected this one would be excellent too, I wasn't as pumped as I was for let's say his last book about the USFL. There were even parts in the middle of the book that I felt dragged.

But the stories he tells are always good. He is brilliant at getting his subjects (or people who know them well) to open up and tell him things that make you laugh out loud, shake your head, or piss you off.

This covers the Lakers from the summer that they drafted Kobe Bryant and signed Shaquille O'Neal as a free agent, till the end of the 2004 NBA Finals. I won't give away any of the craziness, but I will say this.

Before I started to write this part of my blog, I went back to what I wrote the day Kobe Bryant was killed, and the first thing I said was that I wasn't the world's biggest Kobe fan. And this book not only reminded me of why I wasn't, but also shed light on things I hadn't heard about him. Things had I known, would have made my initial dislike of him even stronger.

The book was pretty much finished at the time of Kobe's death, the author prefaced the book about how he found out about it. If you are a huge Kobe fan, and get easily offended, then you might not want to read this book. But I always say, Jeff Pearlman hasn't written a bad book yet.

He still hasn't.

4 Auggies

A couple of notable deaths this week...

EDDIE VAN HALEN- The man could simply do things with a guitar that nobody else could. I'd be less than honest if I came on here and claimed to be a huge Van Halen fan, but there are a bunch of their songs I really like. I remember playing Running with the Devil, when the Knicks were going to the NBA Finals in 1999. (I dedicated it to any of my fellow Knick fans wo thought Latrell Spreewell was misunderstood.)  The other day, when they announced EVH had passed, Ken Dashow played Van Halen's remake of You Really Got Me, complete with Eruption, Eddie solo which segues into You Really Got Me. It don't get much better than that.

WHITEY FORD- The greatest Yankee pitcher of all time. I'm not sure I'll get much of an argument from anyone about that. His 236 wins all came in Pinstripes. He's second all time in strikeouts, tops in shutouts, and amongst starters, he is 7th in ERA.

Remember, there were no LCS or LDS or Wild Card when he pitched. If he made it to the postseason, it was the World Series.

22 World Series starts, 10 wins. Both still records.

If you need any reminder about what an screwed year this has been, consider that both NY baseball teams lost their greatest pitcher within weeks of each other.

Hope everyone is hanging in there.

Weekly Mail October 4, 2020

 Hi Folks:

If you live here in the NY area and you were able to get out for a bit this weekend, you got to enjoy some spectacular fall weather. As much as I complain about the fall, what with back to school and shorter days, these crisp clear fall afternoons are really what makes life worth living. Especially in these troubling times. I know it's hard to enjoy if you are walking around with a mask on, but still, it felt really nice to be out and about.

So let's get to it.

News Item: TRUMP TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19

So many conflicted feelings when this story broke. Should we feel bad for him getting sick, or he brought this upon himself, so f-ck him?

Well, let me tell you how I feel and do with it what you will.

1) It's never a good thing when the President of the United States is incapacitated. Love him or loathe him, he's the person in charge, so it behooves us all to hope that he recovers quickly. I believe most right minded people feel this way.

2) That said, it's hard to have any sympathy for him. Without going into how much responsibility one wants to lay on him for not controlling the virus back in the beginning of the pandemic, he had not only refused to mask up himself, but has encouraged those around him not to wear masks either. He openly mocked Joe Biden for wearing masks during that freak show debate on Tuesday (more on that later on) and I recall he made fun of Hillary Clinton when she had pneumonia back in 2016. As John Lennon once sang "Instant Karma's gonna get you." This might not have been instant, but it was Karma for sure.

The Biden's BTW offered good wishes for the President to recover and also pulled all his negative ads.

3) I had a teacher in high school who will go nameless (though my fellow Crusaders will know who I'm talking about right away) who couldn't stand JFK. "I didn't want him to get killed, the teacher told us "I wanted him to live so I could vote him the hell out of office (in 1964)."  I thought about that as I watched Trump get on Marine One on his way to Walter Reed Medical Center on Friday.

I was under the impression that if the candidate was unable to continue to run, the VP Candidate would step in, but that's not the case, not for either Trump or Biden.

Especially since there has been early voting, Trump would remain on the ballot. If he passed away and still one, the vote (if I'm understanding this correctly) would go to the Electoral College. Those electors would cast votes for a new President. Could be Mike Pence, could be someone else. And of course, it would most likely get tied up in the courts for who knows how long.

Bottom line: Pray he recovers whether you are going to vote for him or not.

News Item: THE DEBATE DEBACLE

On Wednesday morning on my way into work, I was listening to CNN, and the anchors of the morning show were talking about how shocked they were about what an unmitigated disaster the previous night's Presidential debate was. And all I could think was "Were these people living under a rock for the past 5 years?"

And it wasn't just them either. I heard many people saying they couldn't believe what they saw on Tuesday night. People have short memories.

"How have we come to this? This is supposed to be a campaign for the most powerful office in the land...... I mean this is what they do in banana republics. This is the United States of America. People keep asking me have I've ever seen anything like this and I keep saying no. And I just hope to God, I don't see another campaign like this one. America can do better than what we have seen here tonight. This was just disgraceful. "

Anybody remember this? This was CBS Bob Schiffer after the town hall debate between Trump and Hillary Clinton 4 years ago.  Before that, we had Trump and Marco Rubio talking about small hands and what else is small. I mean, this is Trump's M.O.

Chris Wallace took a lot of heat for not being able to get a handle. And again, he had to know what he was getting into and should have been more prepared. That said, I'm not sure anything short of a mute button was going to keep Trump from interrupting Biden. Did Wallace lose control of the debate? He sure did. Could anyone have done better? Lester Holt looked like he had just gone 15 rounds with a prime Mike Tyson after Trump-Hillary last year. But maybe his having done it before might have given him an edge.

And normally, I'd take a candidate to task if they told their opponent to shut up or called him a clown. But I can't blame Biden for doing either.

For most, the big moment in the debate was when Wallace asked Trump to condemn white supremacy

Transcripts courtesy of USA TODAY....

1:04:23 WALLACE

Okay, you have repeatedly criticized the Vice President for not specifically calling out antifa and other left-wing groups. But are you willing, tonight, to condemn white supremacists and militia groups? And to say that they need to stand down and not add to the violence in a number of these cities, as we saw in Kenosha, as we've seen in Portland? Are you prepared specifically to do that?

1:04:46 TRUMP

Sure, I’m prepared to do it. I would say- I would say, almost everything I see is from the left-wing, not from the right wing-

1:05:55 WALLACE

So what do you, what do you say-

1:04:56 TRUMP

I'm willing to do anything I want to see peace.

1:04:57 WALLACE

Then do it, sir.

1:04:59 BIDEN

Say it, do it, say it.

1:05:00 TRUMP

You want to call them -- What do you want to call them? Give me a name, give me --

1:05:04 WALLACE

White supremacists and, white supremacists and right-wing --

1:05:07 BIDEN

The Proud Boys.

1:05:07 TRUMP

Proud Boys, stand back and stand by. But I'll tell you what, I'll tell you what, somebody's got to do something about antifa and the left because this is not a right-wing problem. This is a left-wing problem

Some of the Trumpsters have said that "Sure I'm willing to do that"  "I'm willing to do anything. I want to see peace." and even the moneyquote "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by." are all examples where Trump denounced white supremacy. Give me a break. Even if you're going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say "He meant to say Stand Back and Stand Down, instead of Stand By, he still clearly didn't want to piss off anyone who he thought would support him.

And as bad as that was, that wasn't Trump's low point, IMHO.

This was...

BIDEN

And speaking of my son, the way you talk about the military, the way you talk about them be losers and being, and just being suckers. My son was in Iraq. He spent a year there. He got, he got the Bronze Star. He got the Conspicuous Service Medal. He was not a loser. He was a patriot. And the people left behind there were heroes.

1:10:23 TRUMP

Really? You talking about Hunter? Are you talking about Hunter?

1:10:23 BIDEN

and I resent -- I’m talking about my son, Beau Biden. You’re talking about --

1:10:30 TRUMP

I don’t know Beau. I know Hunter. Hunter got thrown out of the military. He was thrown out, dishonorably discharged for cocaine use.

1:10:37 BIDEN

That's not true, he wasn’t dishonorably discharged. None of that is true.

That was the throw the remote at the TV Moment for me.  The fact that he attacked Hunter Biden was bad enough. Trump could have 1) told Biden, "Yes you're son Beau was a hero and as a father myself, I'm so sorry he passed away,"  and 2) He could have used the opportunity to blast the Atlantic Report that Biden was referring to where Trump called our fallen soldiers losers and suckers.

Instead he acted like he had never heard of Beau Biden (which is bullshit) and attacked Hunter's drug issues and brought up the discredited story about Hunter getting money from the mayor of Moscow. And didn't deny the Atlantic story.

Trump's kids are working in the administration, specifically daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner. To me, they are fair game. Hunter Biden's drug issues have nothing to do with Joe Biden's fitness for office. This was as low a blow as you could throw. Biden didn't say anything about Trump's kids.

And Trump had the gall to say Wallace was against him. What a thin skinned wuss he is.

With Trump laid up in the hospital, the status of the next two debates is unclear. Even if they have them, I doubt I’ll watch them. I’ll put something else on, something less offensive, something easier on the senses, something with a little more style and class.

Like a cock fight*.

And speaking of the Proud Boys, according to the Daily Beast, one of the criteria for joining the group is that members are only allowed to masturbate once a month....

In the past, “third degree” Proud Boys were prohibited from masturbating more than once a month. But the new rules, under a section in the bylaws dubbed “No Wanks,” extends that prohibition to all Proud Boys.

“No heterosexual brother of the Fraternity shall masturbate more than one time in any calendar month,” the new rule reads, adding later, “All members shall abstain from pornography.”

I don't mean to make light of these a-holes, but I have to ask, how do they enforce THAT rule? Is it like when you show up for work and they ask if you have any COVID symptoms? Do you have to submit your underwear for inspection?  Fill out a form? And what's the purpose? To keep them angry and on edge enough to cause mayhem?

No right minded person would join a bunch of a-holes like that anyway, but maybe they wouldn't be so angry if they made like George Costanza with a copy of Glamour more than once a month.

BASEBALL: Playoff Picture

I was so busy woofing on the Mets last week, that I forgot to discuss the playoffs. So here are a few thoughts on the week that was.

1) I thought that the Yanks-Cleveland series could go either way. What I wasn't expecting was the Bronx Bombers putting up a 7 runs in 4 2/3 against Indians ace Shane Bieber. Bieber the best pitcher in the AL if nor the majors this year. The Yanks took care of business the next night too, outslugging the Tribe 10-9 in a dreadfully long Game 2. They will now take on the Rays in the ALDS.

And BTW... I think this idea that you have to do this bracket style is stupid. They really should have reseeded after this first round. But I believe because brackets are more inviting for those who like to gamble, they do it this way. Now what would have been a great ALCS, will take place in the ALDS.

Stupid.

2) The Marlins who mix in a World Championship around a bunch of 100 loss seasons, are at it again. They don't make the playoffs often, but when they do, they are a difficult out. They have never lost a playoff series in their 28 year existence. Both times they made the playoffs, they won the World Series.

And now they play the Braves who are the opposite: they make the playoffs almost every year, and almost never get to the World Series. I hate to say it, but I think that trend is going to continue here.

3) And speaking of perineal playoff chokers, the Minnesota Twins could have done our fair nation a huge favor and knocked the lying cheating Houston Astros out of the playoffs. But no dice, now a team that finished with a losing record has advanced. (The other team to qualify with a sub .500 record, the Brewers were bounced by the Dodgers)

I'm gonna predict the Yanks and A's to advance to the ALCS and the Marlins and Dodgers to make it to the NLCS. I'm not usually right on these things, and especially in this crazy year it's hard to predict. But that's where we stand.

One more baseball note: Bob Gibson died Friday night at the age of 84. There are two individual records in North American sports that I find mind boggling.. The first in Wayne Gretzky having more assists than any other player has points in the NHL. Put another way, if the NHL decided that Gretzky had to forfeit his 894 goals (also an NHL record BTW), he would still be hockey's all time leading scorer.

The other record is Gibson's 1.12 ERA in 1968. I'm so convinced that record is never going to be broken, that I think the ERA to shoot for is Dwight Gooden's 1985 ERA which was 1.53. It's been 34 years and a couple guys have come close to Gooden, but it still stands.

Gibson's 1.12 ERA is just unfathomable. And the fact that he lost 9 games that year makes that even more remarkable. There's no other way around it, Gibson was a beast on the mound.  Shoutout to my man Dr. Steve Butler for sending me this from SI:

Gibson made 34 starts in 1968: He finished 28 of them and was lifted for a pinch hitter in the other six, which means he was never removed from the mound all season. Just as well: Given Gibson's menacing personality, a manager would have had to wear oven mitts to remove him.”

Also worth mentioning, especially in these difficult times, Helen Reddy passed away this week. The I Am Woman, hear me roar singer was 78.

HOCKEY: Farewell to the King:

The Rangers bought out the last year of Henrik Lundqvist's contract this week, ending his 16 year run as Rangers goalie.

Mike Richter was the goalie when they won the Cup in 1994. I saw John Vanbeisbrouck almost single handily backstop the team to the conference finals in 1986. I was too young to have seen it, but I heard the story about how the Garden shook the night Eddie Giacomin came back after he had been picked up by the Red Wings in 1975. All of them great.

Hank was the best.

And there are going to be some yahoos who say he wasn't the greatest because he didn't win a Cup here in NY. It's a stupid arguement. The man got us to the Finals in 2014, and ECF in 2012 and 2015. And nearly 2 more CF's in 2007 and 2017. For 12 of his 16 seasons here in NY, we had a chance. And we had a chance almost entirely because of him.

Hank was the best.

He was the face of this franchise. And win lose or draw I never once questioned his heart or his commitment to winning. I saw him get run by the opposition with little or no retaliation. I saw the refs screw him with non calls. I saw too many games where he kept them in it because they couldn't score to save themselves.

Hank was the best.

I hope he does hook up with another team and get himself a ring. But regardless, is stature as one of NY's great athletes should never be in question.

Somebody wrote this in to Mike Vaccaro at the NY Post...

Pro Football recently returned to Los Angeles. Any guess on when it will return to New York?

Good Question. The Jets and Giants are a combined 0-8. SMH.

and Have a Great Week.
