Hey Everybody:
Sorry I didn't write last week.
Good news last week was that I got to see many relatives who I hadn't seen in a while on my dad's side of the family. The bad news was that it was for a sad occasion.
My Uncle, Sam Garcia passed away last week. A veteran of both WWII and the Korean War, he was buried with full military honors at Calverton National Cemetery. I had never been to a military funeral before, and it was quite moving. There are 6 veterans at the entrance to the cemetery, three of them are holding American Flags, the other three are saluting. That pretty much gets me every time.
When my Uncle Jack passed in 1997, he had a full police funeral. The sight of all the cops in full uniform saluting as his casket went by made me openly sob like I couldn't believe. Just how each man was saluted by their country and their city respectively, it can't help but move you.
RIP.

2016 ELECTION
So Wikileaks has released a slew of e-mails that they hacked from Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta's account. These e-mail's not only confirm many of the suspicions I have of the Democratic nominee, but also raised a few new ones.
So why am I not happy about this development?
Mainly because I can't believe a slug like Julian Assange could possibly have a say in how this election turns out. I'm not a big fan of hacking. I didn't like it when Wikileaks did it to George W. Bush and friends during the war in Iraq, I didn't like it when my fellow News Corp. employees were accused of doing it at the News of the World, and I don't like it now.
Dammit, if we can't protect the government's e-mail from hackers, how the hell can we be certain that any of our e-mails are safe. Now granted, this is coming from a man who broadcasts his thoughts all over God's green earth once a week, so it shouldn't really bother me, but it does.
Because if a weasel like Julian Assange can do it, than so can ISIS.
2016 WORLD SERIES
I can't believe the Indians are but one win away from winning the World Series. I should be happy for them, after all they haven't won diddly since 1948. But that's a mere 68 years ago. Compare that to the 108 years that the Cubs have had to wait, and 1948 seems like yesterday. Besides, Cleveland just had a championship back in June with the Cavaliers. One title every 50 years in enough for Cleveland, two in one calendar year? Spare me.
Of course, I blame all this on that ESPN 30 for 30 documentary, Believeland. That brilliantly done film dealt with the highs and mostly lows of the city that hadn't won a championship of any kind since December 27, 1964. This came out a couple of months before LeBron and Co. ended the drought, so in a way it's kind of like the reverse of the Sports Illustrated cover jinx. Maybe the good folks at ESPN can do a documentary of Mets, Jets, Ranger and Knick Fans born after 1973, who have witnessed two titles in their lifetimes and none since 1994. Joe Beningo from WFAN could narrate it.
NFL RATINGS DECLINE
It couldn't have happened to a better bunch of guys.
Multiple reports has said that the TV ratings for the NFL have never been lower. There have been a whole slew of explanations/excuses, including that fiasco of a Presidential Campaign, the quality of play (or lack thereof) and my personal favorite an over saturation of games.
Let's examine the last one there shall we? You now start the football weekend off on Thursday night, which always throws off my picks, then the past couple of weeks, there's been a game in London on Sunday, so now your football day starts at 9:30 AM. Then you have the usual slate, which is 1 PM, 4:15 and then Football Night in America, a Sunday Night Game on NBC with history's most overrated broadcaster, Al Michaels. And then to end things off, Monday Night Football on ESPN. There was a time in my life where I didn't miss Monday Night Football, now I don't even watch it if the Jets are playing in it.
A couple of years ago, they played a game on Tuesday night, because the roof of the Metrodome in Minnesota caved in. I clearly remember Mike Francessa saying "If the ratings for this are any good, they'll start playing games on Tuesday too" Can you imagine? The ratings would really go down the toilet.
I submit that part of the reason people are so turned off is that the NFL has this attitude that it doesn't really matter if our players are smacking their women around, or driving drunk or generally just being a-holes, you're going to watch us anyway.
Well maybe not.
Maybe people are finally waking up and realizing that there's more to life on Sunday afternoons then watching these spoiled millionaires. Maybe Roger Goodell should wake up and realize that guys like Josh Brown aren't guys we want to root for. (And yes Giants fans, I realize I have a guy on my team who was pulled over for speeding with a 12 year old kid and a shotgun in his car) Mike Vaccaro called the NFL our national addiction.
Maybe some of us have entered rehab.
And one more note on the NFL. There was some considerable hang wringing a few weeks ago over the behavior of Odell Beckham Jr. Let me break it down for y'all.
If the Giants win, Beckham is firery, passionate and competitive.
If the Giants lose, Beckham is hotheaded, uncontrollable and a head case.
I always quote Ted Turner...There's a fine line between being colorful and being an a$$hole.
Happy Halloween

Weekly Mail October 16, 2016
You know how I always talk about being a summer kid, how much I hate the changing seasons, the early darkness, school, homework, the whole 9 yards?
Saturday was one of those really good days that can make you forget all that.
Nothing spectacular happened, it was fairly routine. But the weather was amazing, not too cool but not blazing hot. Just perfect.
I didn't get up super early, but didn't exactly sleep in. Got a bunch of stuff done, but not so much that the day was shot.
It would have been nice not to have to work, but the weather was so nice that the walk from Penn Station was pleasant, despite dodging tourists, desanudas, and other folks who have not a clue about how to walk in Manhattan.
It was a day to not worry about Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, the Jets, or other less important things like bills, Timmy's homework, or the million and one things in my house that are broken.
It was just one of those glorious fall afternoons. One's I don't like to think about during the summer when I'm at the pool or the beach, but once they are here, are amazingly enjoyable.
And now, having said all that, let's talk about Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
ELECTION 2016
It's almost over folks.
On Tuesday, it will be 3 more weeks. Yes, it's going to be a long 3 weeks, but what has seemed to take forever is now just 3 weeks away.
I love Presidential Elections, I always have. Watching the candidates criss-cross the country, watching the poll numbers coming in during the primaries, The craziness that is the Iowa caucus, watching states that don't usually make the news like New Hampshire and South Carolina all of the sudden being the center of the nation. The debates, the conventions the whole 9 yards. I love it.
But not this year. Not this cycle.
The words of the great Bob Schiffer are still ringing in my ears from last week. "I hope to God I never see another campaign like this again."
I actually watched last Sunday's debate figuring it would be a mess, but that at least we'd get a couple of laughs out of it. But there was nothing funny, or fun about it.
People are having fun at the expense of the dude in the red sweater Ken Bone. Some people are breaking his chops because he is undecided. How can you be undecided? they scream. The choice is so obvious. Is it?
Just look at what's gone on here the past week. You have a bunch of ladies coming out of the woodwork to claim that Trump was inappropriate. Anything from calling them fat and ugly to reaching up women skirts or kissing them. Just absolute disgusting behavior.
And then Wikileaks comes out with a slew of hacked e-mails that pretty much confirms that the media and the DNC was in the tank for Hillary Clinton.
The problem is, I've become so jaded by this process, that instead of shaking my head at the bad behavior, I find myself questioning the timing.
Like why now did the Access Hollywood tape come out, and then all of these ladies making these claims. Most of the incidents took place years ago. even allowing that to come forward takes an incredible amount of courage, why didn't they do so when Trump first announced his candidacy? Or even when it was clear he was going to be the nominee? Why now?
Same thing with Wikileaks. They had to have had these e-mails for a while, why release them now?
The whole thing smacks of an October Surprise. That final torpedo that campaigns fire to sink each other. The women who may have been abused have every right to seek justice. Did somebody put them up to doing it now?
That's what this campaign has come to, neither one deserves the benefit of the doubt.
Sad.
TELEVISION- ALEX TREBEK IS A POMPOUS A$$HOLE
For the second week in a row, we have a Well, Duh Headline.
There are few more obnoxious people on TV then Alex Trebek, longtime host of Jeopardy. For 30 years, this creep has acted like he's a walking encyclopedia, often seemingly putting people down for not correctly answering the most difficult questions, acting like he knew the answer all along, even though it's right in front of him on a cue card. His self-righteousness is what made those late 90's SNL skits with Will Ferrell and Darrell Hammond so enjoyable. Trebek makes Mike Francessa look humble.
This week, Trebek sank to a new low. Susan Cole, a librarian from Bowie, MD explained to the worlds smartest man that she was a fan of Nerdcore Hip-Hop.
"It's people who identify as nerdy. rapping about the things they love, video games, science fiction, having a hard time meeting romantic partners. you know. It's really catchy and fun.
Losers, in other words. His majesty replied,
He later said he was teasing, but like Donald Trump, his reputation goes before him. What a douche bag. I usually find myself watching M*A*S*H reruns on ME TV at 7 PM during the week, but every once in a while I watch Jeopardy. It takes me about 5 minutes to remember why I hardly ever watch anymore.
And his name is Trebek
BASEBALL: 2016 PLAYOFFS
Now I can rest easy. Now I don't care who wins.
That's not exactly true... I wouldn't mind seeing either the Cubs or Indians end their long national nightmare. (108 and 68 years respectively.) But it won't affect me either way. Unlike had the Nationals or Giants won the whole thing.
The thought of Daniel Murphy carrying the Nationals like he carried us last year was enough to make my stomach turn. As much as I love Murph and was grateful for what he did last year, (at least till the World Series) it would have been too much to watch. Especially knowing that with a healthy squad, I really believe we could have caught the Nationals.
I hate the Nationals. I feel bad for the folks in Montreal who lost their team, I resent the fact that a city who couldn't support a team twice before was given a third shot.
But if there's one team I hate almost as much as the Nats, it's the Giants, and their annoying habit of winning the World Series in even numbered years. Watching them beat my Mets, and the thought of them once again running the table gave me the heebee-jeebees.
Thank goodness the Cubbies took care of the Giants, and the Dodgers, despite their best efforts to lose, put away the Nationals.
The Rangers beat the Islanders the other night on the opening night of the season for both teams. I hadn't been that nervous watching a hockey game since Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals in 2015. Getting that worked up over the first game of the season should guarantee me a room at Creedmore.
Have A Great Week

Weekly Mail October 9,2016
I'm sorry this is coming out so late, I decided to watch the Town Hall Debate in St. Louis tonight, and I probably would have been better off just sticking to my original plan and sending out what I had already typed up. More on that $h-tshow later. For now, let's start with the bad news from Wednesday night.
SPORTS: RIP 2016 METS:
I decided that if the Mets lost Wednesday night, I would maintain radio silence for a few days, rather than do what I usually do and start ranting. I was hoping that three days of no on line posting would cool me off and allow me to write a rational level headed requiem for what was, all things considered, a successful season.
But let's face it, that's a $hitty way to lose. One and done. And what made it even more excruciating was that our ace, the mighty Thor himself, couldn't have pitched any better. A no-hitter through 5 (you knew that wasn't gonna last), a shutout through 7. Out he came, in came Addison Reed who despite some shakiness, managed to get out of the eighth without allowing a run.
Enter Jeurys Familia.
Familia wasn't supposed to be our closer. That was supposed to be Jenry Mejia, who apparently couldn't get out of bed in the morning without taking some sort of performance enhancing drugs. Familia was forced into the role and to be fair, has generally excelled in it. 43 saves last year, 51 this year. 100 total for his career.
Like my fellow Postie Phil Mushnick, I have a huge problem with the way relievers are used. I can't stand this 7th inning, 8th inning, 9th inning crap. I've been talking about this for years. If you have a guy who is lights out in the 7th inning, why take him out for a designated 8th inning guy who may not have it that night? Mushnick, in his Post column, has pointed out time and time again, how a pitcher who came in and slammed the door in the 7th or 8th inning was lifted for a guy who got rocked in the 9th. And no one questions the manager, because after all, as Mushnick points out, he was simply managing "by the book."
Well the book bit us in the a$$ the other night.
Now in fairness, Noah Syndergaard was just about out of gas after 7, and Reed wasn't exactly Mr. Good Morning, Good Afternoon and Good Night in the 8th. The move to Familia was the right call, even in a scoreless tie.
The problem of course is that for the 4th straight post season game, dating back to last October, Familia blew it. Game 1 of the World Series in Kansas City, and Games 4 and 5 in Flushing, he blew three saves. Games 4 and 5 were not entirely his fault, as sloppy fielding by Daniel Murphy in Game 4 and Lucas Duda in Game 5 had more to do with those losses as did Familia's pitching, but still a blown save is a blown save. And a loss is a loss.
My first reaction of course was to send Familia packing. I've seen this movie before, and it starred one Armando Benitez, another Met reliever who was spectacular when the games meant nothing, only to turn to jelly when the season was on the line. Some announcer last year compared Familia to Benitez and I went bat$hit, because Familia at least seemed like he could save a big game.
Now I'm not so sure. And part of me doesn't want to wait till next year to find out.
But is cutting him lose really practical? I mean he's got a good arm, he's fairly young, and let's face it, I know the save is a stat easily manipulated, but 51 saves is 51 saves.
It's just fairly obvious that he doesn't have the stomach for the big game. So I think the best solution is to do away with the whole 8th inning man, 9th inning closer configuration and simply pitch the hot hand. When the Mets won it all in 1986, both Jesse Orosco and Roger McDowell had over 20 saves. Why not go back to that system?
It has to be better that this. I am sick and tired of seeing Met starting pitching go to waste because of a bullpen that spits the bit. It happened in 1999, 2000, 2006 and last year. The young guns we have now deserve someone who can back them up and close their games out.
Jeurys Familia is obviously not that someone.
MORE METS: Sayonara Cespedes?
The universal opinion is that Yoenis Cespedes is going to exercise the option in his contract to void the last two years of his deal and test the free agent waters.
And there's a good part of me that says if he chooses to do this, we should let him walk.
Look, I understand that when he is on, there is nobody who can carry the team on his back quite like he can. I know that without him, especially last year, we are not even sniffing the playoffs.
But also, he has faltered down the stretch both years, and he was practically lame during the World Series and spent long stints on the DL this year. Is somebody this brittle and this susceptible to late season breakdowns someone we want to give a fat long term contract to?
Because how much is it going to take to sign his a$$? If he doesn't opt out, he's going to get 25 mil for the next two years. Chances are he is going to opt out to get a higher annual salary and more years. If he is willing to stay at 25 million and just wants to add a year or two, then it might be worth a gamble. But if someone is dumb enough to offer him 5 years at 30 million per, then let that dumb owner have him. That kind of money for a guy who disappears in late September and October/ Let some team with no shot at the playoffs pay him that coin.
And finally, I want to reiterate that I do not consider the 2016 Mets to have been a playoff team. I know that technically what we witnessed on Wednesday night was a playoff game and that the stats accumulated are considered post season stats and I even mentioned Familia's streak of poorly pitched post season games having reached four. But I personally don't count the Wild Card play in game as a playoff game. All winning does is qualify you for the playoffs. I liken the 2016 Mets to the 1985 Mets, who gave us a great September but didn't quite make it to October. And as much as this one stung, the collapses of 2007 and 2008 were much worse. The bottom line is that we lost to a pitcher who is all world in elimination games. As much as I blame Cespedes and Familia for choking,(and they did) at the end of the day, I have to tip my cap to Madison Bumgartner. He is money in the bank.
ELECTION 2016- PENCE VS KAINE
I promised Tara I wouldn't watch last Tuesday's VP debate. I knew I was going to be watching the Mets on Wednesday, and as she said "Sometimes you have to unplug" So I met her halfway. I ended up reading a book, and following the debate through my politically engaged FB friends.
From what I gathered, GOP VP candidate Mike Pence gave a nuanced calm performance while having to do something nearly impossible..defending Donald Trump. Meanwhile Tim Kaine, the Democrats nominee, came off as pushy, constantly interrupting Pence, much the way his boss was interrupted by Trump.
I really can't remember the last time 2 VP candidates were so dwarfed by the 2 main candidates. I mean Joe Biden was one of the Senate's most experienced members, and even if you felt Sarah Palin was an airhead, if you are being honest, you have to recall what a sensation she was when she first got in the race. Paul Ryan again, disagree with his policies, but he was considered a rising star. As was John Edwards in 2004. When Dick Cheney and Joe Lieberman debated in 2000, both men were hailed for their civility and respect towards one another, in stark contrast to their bosses who took turns sighing and shaking their heads at each other. (And that may have been the last time in history that Dick Cheney was ever considered civil)
But in so many ways, Trump and Hillary have become almost larger than life, that their running mates are almost irrelevant. That's why I couldn't get myself too excited for the debate last week. And it doesn't look like I missed much.
I did catch most of the Town Hall debate Sunday night, (which is why this is coming out so late.) I have to admit I passed out a little more than halfway through it, because even I, who watches these things as much for entertainment as anything else, has had about enough. I woke up in time to hear the great Bob Schieffer, say this on CBS.....
"How have we come to this? This is supposed to be a campaign for the most powerful office in the land...... I mean this is what they do in banana republics. This is the United States of America. People keep asking me have I've ever seen anything like this and I keep saying no. And I just hope to God, I don't see another campaign like this one. America can do better than what we have seen here tonight. This was just disgraceful. "
He laid most of the blame on Trump. I can't really argue with him. Part of the problem was that the first part of the debate focused on what happened on Friday afternoon....
NEWS ITEM: TRUMP IS A MALE CHAUVINIST PIG
Now have I ever written a more "Well duh!" headline in my life?
The audio obtained by the Washington Post, while vile, should have surprised absolutely nobody.
Is it going to sink his campaign, as some have suggested? I don't see how. Sure it's awful, sure it shouldn't be condoned, but at this point, after everything else this blowhard has said and done, what makes anyone think THIS is going to be the last straw?
What I'd like to know is 1) Who had this tape? 2) How long were they holding onto it and 3) Did they think that leaking it now, would cause maximum damage? I definitely don't have the answers to the first two questions and on the third, again, if we already knew Trump was a two time loser in marriage, called a Miss Universe contestant Miss Piggy, and even suggested that he oogles at his own daughter's bod, why would this change the mind of anyone who supports this creep for President? As of this writing, John McCain has announced he is withdrawing his support for Trump and Paul Ryan cancelled an appearance with him. Personally I didn't think McCain was going to vote for Trump anyway. I think all the Bush's are voting for Hillary, including the old man and W.
Trump's voters are dug in. So are Hillary's. No matter what they do, you're not going to change anyone's mind at this point. I really believe that.
NEWS ITEM: DEBLASIO HATES THE POST.
Christ, has New York City ever had a bigger putz in City Hall than the guy that's there now?
Look, I had my beefs with Guiliani and Bloomberg, and Dinkins was in over his head, but since I've been following politics, I've never seen someone so out to lunch as the current mayor of NY.
Yes, I'm a little pissed that he called out my peeps at the NY Post this week. Blowing off and taunting our City Hall chief , referring to the Post as a right wing rag, and suggesting that the Post is not a real media outlet. According to the Times on Friday...
In a telephone interview late Thursday, Mr. de Blasio said it was time to “have this conversation” about The Post, which he described as “a very negative presence in our city” and an “ideological apparatus” with little resemblance to a truth-seeking news operation.
“I think it’s important, as the leader of this city, to say out loud what so many people already know,” he said. “The Post’s approach has gotten worse and worse.”
Oh, please STFU!
And you know something? Probably a lot of the same people who are applauding this turd for going after the Post are the same ones blasting Trump for his thin skin against the media. Both of these guys are absolute wimps. Again, I can't stand Hillary Clinton, but she wouldn't get into this kind of scrape. Not in a million years. de Blasio is apparently going to campaign for her this weekend. If I were her I'd tell him to stay the f-ck home.
I hope to hell he gets voted out next year. I really do.
We sent our thoughts and prayers to the people of Haiti, Florida and anyone else who was affected by Hurricane Matthew.
AND
I don't care if I come off as insensitive or ignorant or whatever name you want to slap me with, I will not EVER refer to the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day. If you are lucky enough to have the day off, (which I don't) Enjoy your Columbus Day.
Everyone Else, Have a Great Week.

RECAP: PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE 2016
So I think we pretty much got out of Hofstra what we thought we were going to get. Hillary Clinton with her polished, well rehearsed answers, and Donald Trump with his off the cuff, off the wall remarks.
I wouldn't say Trump had the upper hand in the beginning of the debate, but he did score some points on Hillary, specifically on the trade agreements. But as the debate wore on, and Hillary took shots at him (his taxes, inheriting his father's money, etc) he started getting defensive, Trump always brags how he has the stamina, strength and libido of a 25 year old, but by the end of the debate, he seemed more like the 70 year old grouch that he is. He was practically answering her jabs with "That's what you think" and "Says you."
He needed to go after her more, because certainly Lester Holt wasn't going to do it. That guy was in way over his head. Not only did he not ask Hillary about any of her controversies (Benghazi, e-mail's the Clinton Foundation) but besides scolding the audience once, he had no control over Trump's constant interruptions, and both of them going over their time limits. I always felt Jim Lehrer was the best debate moderator of all time* He knew when to let 'em keep going and when to cut 'em off.
I'm not saying Holt had to be just like Lehrer, but shoot he wasn't even close.
I concur with Razor Ray McGarvey, the debate probably didn't move the needle, it's hard to imagine anyone who was solidly in Trump's camp suddenly saying "I'm with her" and it's impossible to see anyone who was 'with her" looking to switch over to him. I'm looking forward to the next slugfest October 11 in St. Louis. For his sake, he may want to put in a few practice runs.
BTW: The Vice Presidential debate will be on Tuesday. Put it on your DVR just in case there is a night where you can't get to sleep.
EDITORIAL: STOP PICKING ON JIMMY FALLON
Meant to weigh in on this last week...
On September 16, Donald Trump appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Critics went bananas because Fallon tossed soft questions at Trump, then begged him to play with his hair.
Typical Jimmy Fallon stuff,
But there was quite the backlash. People wondering why Fallon didn't bring up trump's indiscretions, or to grill him on the issues. Some yahoo's on Twitter wondered aloud about the questions Fallon would pose to Adolf Hitler or Charles Manson. All sorts of crap like that.
I addressed the stupidity of comparing a blowhard to a serial killer and a mass murderer in last weeks edition. Now I'm going to address the stupidity of expecting a clown like Jimmy Fallon to turn into Edward R. Murrow all of the sudden.
This all stems from the fact that late night talk shows have turned into pep rallies for the Democratic Party. This is undeniable and indisputable.
John Stewart and the Daily Show? A great show no question. But unquestionably liberal. The Colbert report was a spoof of the O'Reilly Factor, and not a flattering one at that.
Colbert took over for the retirng David Letterman, who would have Al Franken on one night and kiss his a$$, and then Bill O'Reilly on the nest night and grill him mercilessly.
Letterman's case is particularly irksome because the man he has said over and over again was his mentor and hero, the man he was compared to the most, never would be so partisan.
That's not to say that Johnny Carson went easy on politicians. Not even close. But he didn't favor one party over the other. He broke Reagan's shoes as much as he did Carter's. He joked about Micahel Dukakis' height, and George HW Bush's wimpiness, and all others in between. He picked on everybody, therefore he offended nobody.
Fallon is really just following in the tradition of the Tonight Show. Keeping it light. Jay Leno was the same way. (His wife was into liberal causes, but he, like Carson, kept his jokes bi-partisan) If he had messed with Trump's hair, but then grilled Hillary about Benghazi, I could see the uproar. But he provided the candidates with a fun stop on what has been a grueling tour. There's nothing wrong with that. If you can't stand a candidate that much that you hate to see them treated with anything but contempt, don't watch that particular show. As George Carlin once observed, "See how often the simple solution eludes us?
SPORTS: METS MAKE IT TO PLAY IN GAME.
FLASHBACK: From our August 14 Edition...
The Mets are supposed to be contending for the World Series.
Not happening folks. Not this year.
Now, naturally you may want to direct my attention to last year, when the Mets were equally mediocre, and went on that miracle run that carried them to the World Series.
So naturally, a few days later, they began a run that led them to clinch a spot in the playoff game this coming Wednesday. It would appear that once again, a heaping order of crow is on the menu for Wild Bill. I will happily chow down on it.
But not yet. Because I also have a rule about that. Here's another flashback...
I realize that the Yankees officially were considered a playoff team, but I believe that a team that loses the play-in game shouldn't be considered a post season team. (And please before you start killing me on this, please understand I would feel doubly that way if the Mets were in that position.)
Considering where they came from, and how many injuries they have had, getting to this point is certainly an accomplishment. But I'm standing by my rule, You don't make it to the LDS, you're not a playoff team. End of story.
Mets Giants at Citi Field Wednesday night. It's as nerve racking as it gets.
Have a Great Week!
*Actually the greatest debate moderator of all time was Don Imus, who moderated a debate between Senator Al D'Amato and Bob Abrams in 1992. When the two kept talking over each other Imus got up and screamed THAT"S IT! SHUT UP!. Unfortunately, that part is not included in this excerpt.
